Kathy:

I think that when people are referring to " trauma-induced " RLS, it has to do

with RLS beginning (for those who never had it) or worsening for those who

did. In my case, I've had it all of my life, ver intermittently (1-4x a

month) until I had a back injury and surgery in 1990. From that point on,

the RLS has been a constant in my life, an every night thing, unless the

meds do their work. I do know for a fact that the back injury and subsequent

complications that I have had as a result of it have aggravated my RLS. I

also have the " genetic " type, as my mother had it and just recently, I found

out that my brother and sister also have it in a very mild form. Hope this

helps.

Jodi, I had RLS (moderate) from early childhood. When I reached

puberty, it pretty much went away until about 6 years ago (I am now

53 or will be until Feb. 9). It started coming back gradually -

intermittently - until it got to the point that it was every evening

and also in the daytime ... severe problem at this time.

I take Sinimet and Mirapex and get some relief. My father had RLS. I

also had back surgery -. not just before my RLS came back but in the

year before it began to return.

I don't know what this says about my RLS - causes, etc. I really

think that we probably can't generalize at this point. I do think

there's a genetic link for a lot of people. I had never heard of

trauma-induced RLS until this discussion got going. People vary so

much with regard to genetic factors, medical history (both trauma and

other), and other variables (e.g. intake of caffeine) ... it may

even be a combination of things causing some people's RLS.

I did find your comment re back surgery and onset (or recurrence) of

RLS interesting since I had never thought about the two events in

relationship to each other in my own case.

Until I joined this list, I had never talked with any other human

being who had RLS or had ever heard of it. I am so glad I found you

all.
