Dear Collette: No, you're not the only hyper person who has RLS. I cannot

remember when I was able to sit perfectly still. I try. But the minute I

stop concentrating on it, I'm wiggling, my fingers twine each other, I file

my nails (used to bite them), I twirl the pencil in my hand, doodle on any

piece of paper, or any kind of continuous movement. My neck is always

stiff, and even when I lay down to rest, if I think about relaxation, I

realize I'm not relaxed, I'm lying stiffly. Only very slowly, and only if I

get real sleepy, will my body begin to relax. Even so, sometimes at night

I wake up and realize some part of me feels tight and stiff, which means it

hasn't been relaxed. Whether my lifetime of RLS has something to do with

it, or whether I'm just a hyper person, I don't know. I've tried the

self-hypnosis sort of thing where you breathe deeply, then begin relaxing

your muscles, starting with your feet, and feel them relax, and go on up

clear to your head. Doesn't work. My feet won't relax, my knees won't

relax, my hips won't relax, and on it goes. All I end up getting is

frustrated, which makes me even more tense. Ain't life grand!!!
