Guest guest
Kate and all While anything is possible in an individual case of RLS, I know of no credible evidence that either Calcium or Magnesium aggravates RLS. Both have been suggested as supplements to treat RLS, along with other methods of therapy, by neuroscientists on the basis of brain biochemistry. I suggest that you do not change anything in regard to these two elements and your RLS on the basis of undocumented, anecdotal information. There is a recent peer-reviewed article in the literature showing response to magnesium supplementation. I have cited this article before. It might not work with everybody, but I doubt if it can do any harm in the dosages described of 400 mg/day. I have never heard of calcium supplements, in any form, aggravating RLS. For post-menopausal women, it is very important to maintain calcium intake to combat osteoporosis, which can be very serious if allowed to progress. Kate, chelation is a method of connecting a substance, in this case a mineral, to a carrier molecule. Chelated calcium is claimed to be better absorbed and better tolerated. Technically, that sounds good, but I question the clinical significance. The EEG biofeedback industry is well represented on the Web and information can be gleaned by typing " EEG " in any of the various search engines. Claims are made to relieve insomnia, sleep apnea, attention deficit disorder, auto-immune diseases and other maladies. The equipment and computer program are for sale for several hundred dollars. I know nothing about what kind of research is going on in Philadelphia in this area, so I will not comment on it. Educate yourselves about the use of " EEG " (electroencephalogram) diagnoses and therapy based on the results thereof and come to your own conclusions. Sleep studies always include an EEG and nothing peculiar has been found with RLS patients except for the frequency of leg kicks. Some of these companies are selling the equipment for home use and you are interpreting the " EEG " that the equipment generates through the use of the computer program. Treatment is based on the suggestions of the program. Happy New Year to all. Dr. Levin
