Get the doctors to explain entire surgery, via drawings, have surgeon talk directly to patient.Let patient ask questions. Take notes, who said what, etc. 3. Check out doctors credentials. Ask questions. Check backgrounds if you have to. 4. Try alternatives first. Orthotics, AFO's, Physical Therapy, etc. 5. Doctors work for you! I look at it this way, my doctors are my EMPLOYEES! I am their " employer " (using a new paradigm here or one that is a bit progressive) but, since I have to pay them, they had better " work for me " (and do good work!) This idea of doctors working for me saved me from an amputation of my right foot that was hurt in a car accident. In comes the ortho surgeon (a stranger), schedules surgery, doesn't tell me! A Nurse said " so, you're having surgery.... " There I am in the hospital, being " observed " for a concussion, and suddenly I find out I am scheduled for surgery - a foot amputation no less! I told the nurse to get the doctor in immediately. After lambasting him with expletives, I said " You are fired " ! Then I requested requested some physical therapy for my foot, it healed, I got over the concussion, and in a few weeks was back to work. That was as recent as 1991.
