There would be no point in doing it in my mind if I were still taking opiods, benzodiazapines, or parkinson drugs......anything. The only thing I will take in the event of a bad RLS attack is extra-strength Tylenol. This is too important. Why in the world would I spend my good money and take your time and trouble to read about something when I was treating myself with a prescription medicine? I know my painkillers work........they have worked for the past twenty years. No addiction, no tolerance, no side effects. I am taking the mildest of them all, I believe.......plain codeine. I have stopped all other medication already. I am very much willing to do my part for any testing with this terrible affliction. I realize that everyone reacts differently. If I do not get any benefit, someone else may........if I do get help from it, someone else may not. But I will at least know that it truly is possible for me to be helped by DHA. My test will not be the last word because I could be resistant to it. But I have an open mind and will look at this honestly and deeply. I am not swayed by other people's opinions at all. I have never experienced " placebo " effects from anything. I do want this to work and will give it the fairest chance that I possibly can. I have several physicians in my family that I can turn to for guidance. They are definitely not against alternative medicine. They are good, honest, open-minded doctors. I very much want to find a source of relief that is inexpensive and not dangerous......and is truly effective. I want this for myself as well as for my daughter, who I believe is just beginning to experience some symptoms......and for my " adopted " girls and dear friends who suffer as I do with this miserable malady. Alternative medicine will never get the recognition it deserves if we do not do our small part and give it the proper testing. Individual testimonials are given by so many people who have not tested a substance by itself. How can I sit here and criticize this field of medicine for not doing proper research if I am not willing to do this much myself? In all good conscience, I would never recommend that you try something that I have not tested out properly. Of course, you all will most likely have to pay if I am up every night with rls....:-) But since I am retired now, I am a good candidate for doing this. I will be making my order today and as soon as the DHA arrives, I will begin. I'm going to be perfectly honest with you.........I do not expect this supplement to be particularly effective for rls, but I will be extremely happy if it is. I will stand up and shout it to the world if I am wrong. Do not bother to tell me that I am going into this with the wrong attitude. That is pure hogwash! I am not a fool and would not be doing this at all if I did not have an open mind. I know for a fact that the stuff is very good for overall health so I surely will not be wasting my time here. At this point in my life at 63, I can use all the help I can get. Dr. at s Hopkins has mentioned to me recently that he wanted to explore nutritional possiblilites as related to RLS. I agree that it is certainly worth doing and after giving the DHA a fair chance I will begin to add other things while keeping my journal. Folic acid, Potassium, magnesium, B Vitamins, iron in minimal amounts from food sources. If anyone knows of anything else that has been shown to be connected to RLS, please let me know. If you are taking anything that you are convinced is helping, please let me know about it. I have already done no caffeine, do not smoke, tried no sugar, also salt, to exercise or not, hot and cold bathing, heat and ice, aromatherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, had blood tests up the kazoo, nerve tests, MRI's and x-rays........Sinemet, Klonopin, Neurontin, Vicodin, Percocet and Codeine. Best and most consistent for me are the painkillers. They always work, without fail. Do not discount the effect of this type of medication if you think something else is helping you. I have learned that RLS ebbs and it flows. It has remissions. It definitely seems to get worse as we age. We often believe we are doing something to help it when indeed it is just in remission or being controlled by our minds. How many of us have said that we found a doctor who did something to help us, but somehow, we are still here and still having rls attacks. If these doctors were truly helping us, we would be gone! I most definitely do believe in the power of the mind. I also know that many of us do not have these super-strong powers of concentration to just will things away. I have been helped by getting involved in doing something I love, but not to any great extent. It works better for pain in my case than for my rls. I fully realize that many are not capable of this feat and I believe I fall in this group. It is not for lack of trying. I will be preparing my journal today and will attempt to also note anything unusual that I do that might effect my rls.....such as heavy gardening, digging and lifting, particular emotional stress, etc. I will keep you posted as I go along.
