AFOs (no ' needed) are Ankle Foot Orthotics - usually plastic, braces that fit under the foot and up the back of the calf for support, balance, and for foot drop. With all of his surgery I don't know if they would be helpful for him or not. Here are some sites where you can see photos. The first one explains AFOs. CMT is the most common inherited neuromuscular syndrome, but many doctors aren't familiar with it and don't diagnose it at first, if ever. Occasionally CMT is spontaneous, not interited.
