They make your bones not move anymore. Like concrete. They take bones, pins,

staples, glue hammer, nails what ever it takes to fuse them up. I don't have

ankles. It's called osteomety (sp) when they fuse your ankles.

Gretchen,

Bone fusions is what happens when bone touches bone--it will gradually

grow together (fuse) and be one solid component.

In my daughter's case--complete spinal fusion--they sliced many minute

(tiny) pieces of bone from her hip and placed these along her spinal

column, between discs, along with the metal rod--Harrington Rod--that was

hooked to her spine, to pull her spine as straight as possible. She was

then put in a large body cast, while the fusion took place over the next

3-4 months. Time could vary with different people. The hip bone healed

back to normal size, as they took no large amount from any section. The

surgeon described the small pieces of hip bone to be about the size of

toothpicks, but many were needed, as they fused her entire spine.

Hope this wasn't too long--hoping to make clear what fusion is.

Theresa

Gretchen I had ankle fusions done.

My doctor explained it to me this way.

There are all these little bones in your ankle and they scrape out all the

inside junk... blood vessels, cartilage, and then the bones fuse together as

if a bone bone would, making the joint solid and immobile.

Gross huh>?????!!!

that's how it was done in 1981!!!!!
