Guest guest
Jan, There is no specific " test " per se.......like a blood test or xray for ADD. You need to be evaluated by someone who specializes and has a lot of experience in this field. My daughter was diagnosed a few years ago and is doing very well now. She is 36 years old. The ideal doctor to see for this is a Psychiatrist because they have a medical degree also.....not a Psychoanalyst. A Neurologist is probably as good, or any doctor who is interested enough to be educated and experienced in this disorder. They need to take a complete family history and do lots of questioning in regard to your school life, work life, and home life. Do not be put off by people who tell you that this is just a " popular disease of today " . See someone and be evaluated. Look in your telephone book or go on line and find someone. Look at Psychiatrists who treat ADD. You can call and ask if you need to. You may be limited by your health insurance, but I hope you will persevere in this because it can change your life. I know, as sure as I am sitting here, that I have some also. I choose not to take any more medication at this time so I am not treating it. I am 63 years old and I don't have to go out and work anymore......there aren't many demands on my life......so I can let things slide. But I may decide to do something about it in the future. Once you get yourself under control with medication, you can attempt to wean yourself and try to get your life organized in a way that you can get by. There are many support groups and websites for this, and there are written " tests " at these places to give you some idea of what your condition is. I would not let this take the place of seeing a doctor, though. I can give some of them to you if you like. Establishing routines and reminders is of the utmost importance. If you are still in school, though, you need to be able to focus on your education. Have you done any research at all on the Internet ? If you want to discuss this with someone who has it, I can have my daughter e mail you if you like. Just get back to me. Connie
