I'm having a problem understanding when to move from one stage to

another. The only info I found in the book and on the web sites are to

wait until diarrhea is better before moving on. My son has chronic

constipation. When can he go to raw foods?

On page 69, Edition 10 of BTVC, last paragraph, Elaine deals quite simple with

widening

your food choices and progressing. The Stages are just a helpful guideline if

you want to

choose them. They were never written into the original diet and most adults on

the diet

have not read them..

This is true, but I also think it's important to keep in mind that the people on

this board are implenting the diet for children, who in general, are unable to

properly explain how foods make them feel.

The stages chart was created based on the experiences of adults. Attention

was given to what they said about the order of the foods that they were able to

tolerate as they progressed on the diet.

No one has to follow the stages. But it does seem that kids who go slowly

adding new foods do better than just switching to ALL of the allowed foods

immediately. It does make sense that well-cooked pureed foods like

applesauce, pear sauce, etc would be easier to digest than raw celery or

raisins. So, the chart was created based on logic and the experience of

others who implemented SCD for themselves.

The other reason that I had the idea to create it was because we spent SO

MUCH time on the list answering " What should I try to give my child next? "

that it just seemed to make more sense to try to offer a bit of guidance that

could help parents evaluate the ease of digesibility of foods.

I hope that helps everyone understand the purpose of the chart.

Jody,

Thank you-- that explains it and I think I understand now. It's good

to have the stages, but I can also use my judgement. That helps a

lot.
