I went last week to my PCP and have just had time to tell ya'll about it.

Gosh post-op life is busy. Hallelujah! My Doc has been out of town for 2

weeks and I could not get an appointment on April 24. But here are the

results.

Since 1/24/00 I have lost 65 lbs. I have energy and feel great. He did not

do blood tests but will at the one year checkup. I was disappointed however

that my blood pressure was up slightly and he increased the mg of the Covera

HS I am taking. After having took 3 different BP meds for 4 years, having to

take one is not a problem but I was so hoping that I could stop that also. I

was told for years that if I lost weight that I probably would not have high

blood pressure. So much for that.

For Easter I wore a suit that I had bought 2 years ago and had never taken

the tags off because I gained weight and could not button it across my

stomach. It fit perfectly Easter Sunday and now it is too large. How great!

I have found clothes (20W's) that I have had stored that I had forgotten

that I had. Last Saturday I went shopping in my own house and didn't have to

spend a dime. It is wonderful not to have to diet anymore and at the end of

the week see 3-5 lbs gone.

I find that I am really enjoying my life and also my job again. It is

wonderful to finally feel good and have some stamina. I traveled to

Mississippi by air and sat there so smug not having to ask for a seat belt

extender and that my tray table came all the way down. I kept it down even

when I didn't need to just so I could revel in it. I also had to really

hustle in the airport in Memphis to make a gate change before the flight to

RDU left and I made it without having to suck in great gulps of air. I could

not have done it before.

I hate exercise but I have joined a gym that is for ladies only. The folks

there are as spastic as I am and I find comfort in that. You get a 30 minute

workout moving from machine to machine. Which does not bore me like the

treadmill I have used before. Maybe when I get smaller I will try working

out with all the little hardbodies in a regular gym. I laughed to myself

when the gym person weighed and measured me after one month of exercising.

As she wrote down the loss in weight and inches, she kept saying how great

that was. I haven't told them about the MGB. She was so impressed that she

took my picture and asked if they could use it as advertisement in the

field newspaper. Of course I agreed. LOL! I will be their poster

child in a year!

I can eat almost anything I want. Grease, dairy products and sugar still

give me problems. The only food I have mourned over their loss is Pizza and

Pasta. I tried a slice of pizza last Sunday night that had extra cheese and

I dumped. After that I gave up hope of having it again. Chinese is also not

a good thing. Real Coke which I truly loved tastes horrible and I no longer

miss having it. Not having the cravings anymore is wonderful. Also instead

of overeating and feeling bloated, my new tummy just brings back up the

excess and the excess only. I will learn the right amount to eat after a

while. My stubborness and strong will to do what I want to do really does

cause me some discomfort now. I am a slow learner obviously but I am really

enjoying my life now.

Thanks to all you guys for your support pre-op and post-op it is so good to

know that there is an increasing legion of folks who are now on the other

side.

Hi Sue,

Thank you so much for posting this. It means a lot to me as a pre-op

to hear about the post-ops' lives after surgery (and of course, the

weight loss). It's the details, though, like what you can and can't

eat, and how great it was to chase a plane and not gasp for breath,

and not have to wear a seat belt extender, that really bring it home

for me.

Thank you!

It sounds like you are doing great!

Best wishes for your continued good health and success!

Kind regards,

Great to see you doing so well Sue! After my last trip on an airplane, I

told all my relatives they will not see my face until I can get on an

airplane comfortably! So, when are you going to post pictures???

Frances:

That is amazing to me! I have been addicted to soda for sooooooo long that I

can't imagine not craving them any more. The longest I have been able to

stay off of them is two weeks. This must be a miracle.

I really think it depends on the person. I use to drink about 2 six packs a

day of diet coke before surgery and I still after surgery have cravings for

it but not as much as I did before surgery.

The same goes for sweets I was addicted to them before surgery and I still

have cravings for them after surgery just not as much. Yes I can still eat

sweets after surgery and not dump. I do have to use my willpower to not eat

them. This surgery is not a miracle you still have to work with it.

Dear Smitty:

Did Dr. R give you any reasoning for the fact the some people will dump after

sweets and others won't? I am actually hoping that I will dump after

sweets, I don't want to be tempted at all. Sweet, coke, and cheese have been

the enemy that I have had to tangle with for so long. On one hand I'll miss

them but on the other hand it is like " good riddance " . I am really looking

forward to making healthy choices. What about fatty foods like pizza, do you

have problems with them?

Thanks for sharing!

Jackie, Dr. R. will tell you that dumping happens mostly during the first 3

months after surgery. I did dump on certain things the first few months but

now I can eat anything. So yes you still have to learn how to say no to

certain goodies or eat just a small portion of it but that is my problem once

I have a bite or two of something good I want more. Yes I can still eat pizza

but usually just a slice. Liz

Jackie:

You really will not miss the coke and will not take one if offered. I

used to drink 2 twenty oz. cokes a day before the surgery. Have no

desire for them now. Surgery was March 5, 1999.
