BM loose runny, will goat yogurt help?

has been on SCD for a week now, and the frequency of his BM

is once a day, where last week pre-SCD it was 2-5 per day, so that

is good. However, they are still very loose and bordering on

runny. I don't see how they will get better with what he is

currently accepting: peanut butter, frozen blueberries, dried

cherries, hotdogs. The bulk of what he is eating is the PB which is

high in fiber.

I was wondering if trying to start a little goat yogurt soon would

help gut healing enough to help him desire a bigger variety of

foods. Or would this likely make things worse?

I made ice cream with the beaten egg recipe which he tasted but

rejected. He has also rejected my knox blocks made with

boiled/pureed/strained berries. I was hoping he would accept them

to get some cooked fruit into him. He doesn't like applesauce or

pear sauce either. He is rejecting anything with eggs. I think he

dislikes the taste of honey too, as I tried to sneak a little into

his peanut butter and he said " you don't like that peanut butter. "

I think he is tiring of the hot dogs too.

Any suggestions?

Will he try other nut butters? Like Pecan butter, walnut butter.

Dried fruit (the cherries)is harder to digest because it is uncooked

and has the water removed.

It is hard to know. If you do start, begin small , about 1/8 tsp

the first day.

Have you seen the recipe page at

http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html ?

What was he eating preSCD? We may have some similar or appropriate

suggestions.

Yes, I've seen the recipes on pecanbread. I also have the

cookbook " cooking to heal little tummies. " I have tried chicken

pancakes, golden pancakes, cinnamon pancakes, squash cookies, mock

sugar cookies, pecan muffins, almond muffins, tasty herb bread,

peanut butter cookies, chicken nuggets, etc. He ate the pb cookies

on the first day and since then he rejects them.

Pre-SCD his diet was a lot of carbs. Cereal with soymilk (he seemed

to be lactose intolerant), buns (has rejected beef burgers for a

while now), pb crackers, a little meat esp chicken nuggets, berries,

barely any juice, pizza (sometimes picked cheese off, never liked

cold cheese). He used to accept most foods, but has gotten very

picky in the last 18 months. This is one reason I decided to try

the SCD diet. He was narrowing his food choices so much, that I

thought something must be wrong with his digestive system.

I have not tried other nut butters yet. Maybe on my daily run to

the store I'll pick up some.

I worry about him developing sensitivities to the foods he eats so

much.

Hi Sue,

Ideally the best way to start the diet is to begin with the intro

and then gradually add in increasing more complex to digest foods.

This allows for healing and helps to easily point out which foods

you are ready to digest and which you aren't. Sometimes, though,

the kids just will not eat certain foods.

The next best thing to do is to remove the most complex foods if

there is still gut trouble. It sounds as if things are getting

better after you removed the SCD illegals (sugar, starches etc.)

because the frequency of bm's has reduced but we need to fine tune

things to firm up the stools.

With nuts blanched almonds and pecans are the easiest to digest,

followed by walnuts, hazelnuts (blanched), macadamian nuts, brazil

(blanched) and later cashew (which are " starchier " then the rest.)

There may be more nuts but those are the main ones most people use.

Nut butter is easier to digest than nut flour, then comes nut pieces

and later after plenty of healing whole nuts. The skins on almonds,

hazelnuts and brazil nuts should be removed at the beginning of the

diet because they are very fibrous and can be gas forming (ie cause

trouble). After much improvement nut flour/butter with these skins

can be tried cautiously. The skins on pecans and walnuts aren't as

tough as these above nuts.

There is a chicken nugget recipe at

http://www.scdrecipe.com/r_011_00225.html

which uses blanched almond flour as the coating with a little spice

(sage and salt and pepper)

There are Pizza recipes in BTVC and a great hamburger crust recipe

at http://www.scdrecipe.com/r_004_00041.html

Some people add cooked pureed carrots to homemade pizza sauce to up

the vegetable content. If he likes tomato sauce you can do this in

general with cooked squash or carrots - once pureed it is hrard to

find the vegetables and the spices oregano, basil, fresh garlic...

help mask the flavour of the vegetables.
