Dear Guys:

I don't want to get to Durham only to be sent away for taking medication I

needed to quit two weeks prior to surgery.

I've read the pre-operative instructions over and over and am just not sure

what to do.

It says to stop taking NSAIDs...and it defines it as arthritis meds, etc. I

understand not to take over the counter medications containing aspirin. Is

Vioxx, a prescription medication, which I take for arthritis pain one of

these that I sould discontinue? Or should I continue to take all of my

prescription drugs?

Also, it says that if you are currently taking medication that you should

discuss with Dr. Rutledge whether or not to stop taking it...

I have emailed Dr. R twice asking him what I should keep taking and what I

should discontinue, and I have not heard from him. I don't want to pester

him again but my surgery is two weeks from tomorrow.

Any of you nurses or post-ops out there have any experience you can relate

relative to what meds to continue taking and what meds to stop taking?

Hi Deb: Thanks, I emailed Dr. R twice and got no word back. With two weeks to

go, I had

to make some kind of decision....so with advice from several nurses on the list

I discontinued

the Vioxx. I'm limping and I'm hurting...but it's better than getting to Durham

only to find out

that I needed to stop taking it and didn't. Thanks for your response!

Hi Flo,

I took 25 mg of Vioxx until the day before surgery and then stopped all my

meds. I was taking meds for Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Arthritis, Depression

and Anxiety. When I asked Dr. R. on my morning of discharge when I could

restart taking these meds he told me to wait and to check with him before

starting back on anything.

As it turned out, one of the Pain Killer meds that was prescribed post-op was

a higher dose of Vioxx (40mg)! At two weeks post-op I wound up going back on

my depression and anxiety meds. I was having major mood swings, I think

associated with losing my Littermate (and I'm sure all the hormone

changes due to surgery didn't help either!). My Dr. also put me back on a

lower dose of my BP med because my BP was a little high. I attempted to

contact Dr. R. before my visit with my Dr., but at the time he was grieving

too and not responding, so I went with my Doc's best judgement.

This week my arthritis has been bothering me quite a bit and I've started

back on my low dose of Vioxx. Oops! I just realized that I didn't let Dr.

R. know that either! I go to see my Doc. later this week and hopefully he'll

be as pleased as he was with my progress two weeks ago! I know I am!

I did write to Dr. R. today asking him what I can take for Bronchitis.

has had it for over a week and I seem to be having the same symptoms. My

Doc. will confirm it when I see him, but I'd like to know if there is

something that can't be prescribed with my new tummy. I'm sure I'll hear

from Dr. R. before then. :)

Hope this helps Flo! I'm excited for you!

Hi Flo,

I too had my surgery with Claire!! (Hi girlie!), and I had emailed Dr. R

about the vioxx I took before surgery, and he told me to stop it if I could,

so I did stop about 1 week before surgery. I have had 3 knee surgeries, so I

really notice when I don't take it, but, a week before surgery, knee pain was

not even a thought!!! I had so much going on to get ready, I didn't think

about it much!! Then right after surgery you have a Rx for Vioxx, so that

made things work out great!

Hope this does help some.

Flo, Call or E-mail Dr. R directly he will tell you what to take and what to

stop this info should only be given to you by the surgeon. He willknow what

is best and what is not.

the subject then he knows its me giving advise or asking a very important

question. lol i asked him three times if i had to bring my husband and darn

he answered the same everytime.lol
