You are funny!! I am walking around smiling one minute thinking about what I

will look like a year from now and at other times I am scared and nervous all

rolled into one. I better break out my Rubbermaid containers as well as my

map because I think I am going to heave on my long car ride to Durham.

Hi Jackie,

Yes, I have heard of some people getting a little " cocktail " in the holding

room before surgery to calm them down. Make sure you ask for it!

Dear Jackie:

Thanks for posting that about feeling nervous. My surgery is next Thursday

(5/25) and I'm finding myself getting very nervous, too. I am excited about the

benefits the surgery will bring, but I hate the idea of the anesthesia and the

thought of complications. I know I should " think positive " but it is hard --

and, you are right that when I am not busy I start thinking about it and I get

slightly anxious. I, too, would be interested in how others have dealt with

this, and what sorts of medications pre-surgery (like VALIUM!!!!) might be

available. It's weird -- I had sinus surgery last year and I don't remember

getting this nervous (although I did immediately preceding). However, I only

had about a week or two to " think about " it then, and I guess the time before

the MGB has been more like two months (since I made the decision, etc).

Post-ops and wise pre-ops please help us!! :-)

Ah, dear Jackie, I would be more worried about you if you weren't

nervous. I was " distracting " myself in the weeks before I had my

surgery by adding another big stressor: buying a house. The day

before my surgery, I thought I was angry over not getting proper

instructions. I had a " freak-out " tantrum right in fromt of ol' Doc

R's office. Debbie, bless her, ran back to get the doc. He came out

and made me talk about my fears, including the big one - that I was

afraid that I would die. My recommendation to you is the same as his

was to me: talk about your fears to someone who cares about you.

Say

the words, get them out in the open. I also went to my Daily Word

and the word that day was " healing " and it talked about God's love in

relation to healing. I talked to my Momma for hours after that

little

(NOT!) breakdown. The next day, I was fine, calm as a cukecumber. I

was a little anxious but no more butterflies. Good luck to you,

sweetie.

Hi Jackie: I'm like you are...the nervous type about medical stuff. I'm not

nervous or apprehensive about anything else in my life...just medical stuff.

I hate medical stuff. Makes me feel like a side of beef on a hook in a

Chicago meatyard. LOL. When I had to have a colonoscopy I delayed it so long

that my Dr. refused to renew any of my prescriptions until I had it done. I

was awake all night the night before. My poor husband tried to soothe me but

I was just a wreck. Now that it's over...I can say I didn't like it but I

got through it and I'm going to have to have it again some day and I'll

survive.

Don't berate or beat yourself up because you're the scared and nervous type.

Some of us are...some of us aren't. I too have never had any medical

problems...I haven't been in the hospital other than for an xray since my

youngest was born nearly 29 years ago! I was a scared pregnant person

too....At one point I was such a wreck that my husband just finally said,

" Look Florence, that baby's in there and it's got to come out " ...such a big

help. My husband has had five back surgeries, hernia repairs, broken bones,

a triple bypass...yadda yadda yadda...so he's brave and I'm not.

I think it's ok that we're scared and nervous. We need to have a healthy

respect for what is a major step, medically and psychologically.

What helps me is to read what others say about having this done and the

positive that comes after. I sure don't want to lug this flab around anymore

so if this is what I gotta do, this is what I gotta do. (which means that

this fat is on there and it's gotta come off, lol) I'm doing the worst

possible scenario in my head thing...I'm otherwise healthy, so worst

secenario is I have a leak. It can be fixed...and if it hurts they will give

me pain relief. And if it hurts really bad I'll make a pain in the butt of

myself and get lots more meds...and keep myself out of it...and the

complication rate is very low; almost non-existent right now. We have a

very competent surgeon, we're going to a reputable medical facility, and

having a surgery that is way less than the thousands who have open roux en y

every year..they survive, so I will too...feeling any better Jackie?

Sometimes I think it's better to go with our fears than to fight them. It's

ok to be scared. It's ok to be nervous. That's just how we are Jackie and

if others are brave, that's great. I'm not.

Hugs Jackie and other Fraidy Cats

Jackie,

I was wondering the same thing myself.....I'm starting to get nervous, my

surgery date is May 26th, 10 days away. I'd be interested to know how some

of you all (post-ops) dealt with the anxiety preceding surgery??? Any

drugs??? any suggestions? Thanks.

Jackie,

I can only tell you that I was not nervous only excited. I've had a number

of other surgeries which might have helped to alleviate any fears. The best

advice I can give is to pray. I'm a strong Christian who knows the power of

prayer and the peace it will bring when you know you are in God's will. Keep

yourself busy, spend time with family, pray and seek God's will and the peace

will come. I'm living proof.

8 days post op and never a second thought only excitement.

Hi Jackie,

Sounds like Dr. R doesn't want anyone to be zonked out! However, a little

something to calm the nerves may work. You would still be alert and know that

you want the surgery, just a little less nervous. I do know that others have

had this little " cocktail " so it doesn't hurt to ask when you get to the

holding area.

Hi :

That is all I want is to be less nervous. I just want to be calm not zonked

out. I am trying to deal with all this anxiety through prayer and I will

just wait and see if I still need anything to calm my nerves the morning of.

Boy I hope I am not like Tonni and go last! I want to be first! ( or at

least in the morning! LOL) Why do I have to come from such a nervous, worry

wart of a family?

Thanks,

The cocktail they gave me must have been a double or triple dose because last

thing I remember was the nurse telling me she was putting it in my IV. Next

thing I know I am outside of my room on the fifth floor. Man that was some

good stuff. LOL Liz

Hi Deb:

Glad to hear that you are doing so well. Maybe talking to all of you and

listening to your great advice was just what I need! I am sure that part of

my problem is that I have never really had anything wrong with me. No

surgeries to speak of. Just a spinal tap about 11 years ago. The only thing

I remember from that was throwing up for a week after it. And I was 2 months

pregnant at the time. I do remember being very nervous on the 2 occasions in

which labor was induced. And everything turned out fine then so I will just

have to keep that in mind.

Thank You Jackie!!!!! I kept telling my litter, " I better not be

last!!!! " But YES, I was LAST!!! So now, it will never be forgotten!!!! I

guess that is why Dr.R decided to give me the special prize of being LAST!!!

He gave me an extra port hole!!! Don't fret if you are LAST, just keep

thinking, He saves the best for LAST!! I will admit, I did ask him while I

was in the holding area, " Are you tired?, Do you have big plans after

surgeries? Golf or anything. No need to be rushed! " He chuckled, and said

he was going to drink a soda, and would be right in. I told him, " sit back,

kick your feet up, and really ENJOY that soda so you will be a very happy

camper " He chuckled the whole way out of the room.

So even if you are last, just think, you don't have to stay at the hospital

as long as all those early birds!!!

Good Luck,

Tonni

Jackie,

In my mind, if you went through labor twice, I did too, and you will just

soar through this. Just lay there and hum or something. You aren't in the

holding area that long.

You'll do fine.

Oh, Flo, you are hysterical!! How could I not feel better after getting a

post from you!! I wish you were going to be at my clinic. You would surely

keep me laughing so hard I would probably forget why I was there. This

morning I had to run some errands and the whole time I was talking to God.

My mouth was just a goin'. I know anyone who saw me out on the road this

morning must have thought I was crazy. But it is really helping. Thanks

once again for allowing me to voice my fears. After we all have had our

surgeries all of us land gals should get together. ( I know I am in DE

but I still consider myself a land gal) What do you think Flo and Liz!
