Guest guest
Hi All, BTVC states that certain foods can be added to the SCD once you are symptom free. Does symptom free mean when you have no symptoms and you are off all medication? Thanks,

And many people with IBD or IBS have reported success in going off SCD after being on the diet for at least a year after symptoms stop. Though many people will wait 2 years, or stay on longer. In any event when they go back to non-SCD eating they should still eat as healthily as possible, i.e. not business as usual. About medication: there are people who find that they can go off meds when on the diet and that is great. Or they may be able to go off some meds (e.g. steroids or Imuran or 6-MP) yet need to stay on others, like Pentasa. If you would wait till you were off meds to introduce all the legal food, well, that could take years or months. The meds are pretty much irrelevant to how you introduce food. It's symptoms that count. Here's my son's story: he started SCD after being on prednisone for Crohn's for a month. By then he was symptom-free, and starving, so he skipped the introductory diet but didn't start eating raw vegetables, whole or chopped nuts (vs. ground), and I'm too tired to remember what else, for a good month or two after starting SCD. Then he gradually started on the others. We also started yogurt right away, and in larger quantities than some of the kids are started here (like a quarter of a cup or so vs. a quarter of a teaspoon). Grammy Bauer of this list sets people up with SCD buddies; she'll give you names and e-mail addresses for people in your area who've been on SCD for a year or more, and you are likely to find someone with your condition too, for more tailored help and I think she may also know of SCD-friendly GIs by locale. If you check the archives for the last 2 weeks or so you should find her invitation to find buddies; she issues it every so often. It may also be on this list's homepage. I don't have internet access so I can't tell you for sure. Take care, Fay

We may be understanding the meaning of " adding new foods " differently. I was thinking in terms of adding legal foods such as nuts, seeds, raw vegetables, etc. that are only for people who are symptom-free. Carol, you seem to understand adding certain foods to mean reintroducing foods that aren't legal, which is done very slowly once one is at a point to be able to go off the diet. , what do you mean?
