I hope that you are feeling a little better by now. I think we all know what

kind of treatment we get in the ER. My last attack happened on Mother's Day. I

arrived at the ER after 2 hours of vomiting, laid on the chairs waiting to be

seen for 2 hours while every 10 minutes heading for the bathroom to vomit.

Finally by the time I got to see the doctor, they just took an exay and said it

was a virus. They wouldn't listen to me. They gave me two shots for pain and one

for nausea and sent me home. It took me an hour to get there and on the way home

the pain in my back was so severe, I just wanted to lay by the roadside and die.

I told my husband......never again! And then a few days later got the bill they

charged my insurance company........$3,000 for 5 minutes of their

time!...............Warm thoughts..........Pam ga

me, and I was vomiting. I wonder why I even wasted my time. On one hand, I

much care, " treat 'em and street 'em " They did a dip urinalysis- which was

" normal " gave me a shot of toradol, a Rx for Vicoden and Levaquen and sent

me on my way. I went because that is what my urologist told me to

do.THursday, if the pain go tot bad go to the ER and have them call the doc

on call for his group. (they didn't) I do not own a cell phone and when the

pain and vomiting hit I was on my way from my moms house to home ( about a

30 min drive) so I did not call. Anyway they did nothing, No x-ray, nothing,

just well, it could be a stone but all we do for that is tell you to push

fluids and give pain meds. OK, just exactly how am I going to push fluids

when I am puking all over your exam room? So I guess I will do my best to

make it to Monday morning, by treating myself, to call my Urologist. I don't

know who is on call for his group but without an IVP or the CT we still

won't really know the cause of this pain. Even though this pain is on the

right side it is not the same pain I have been having with the

endometriosis. This is a colic type pain and feels like my previous stones.

I'm writing this at 2:30 am becasue I had to break down and take some of my

oxycotin, it relives the pain but keeps me awake. So here I am, I have also

taken Phenergan and Zofran so far, the nausea is bearable. No phenergan

doesn't make me drowsy either. I have at least made it off of the bathroom

floor. Yeah! OK, I am going to try and go to sleep now. My hubby will be

getting up in a couple of hours to get ready for work. no need to fight over

the computer. (like he would win):>)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All,

I just got back from the ER for the 5th time in the past 2 1/2

weeks. Twice I was admitted..the other times I was forced to sit in

the waiting area for hours. Same scenerio tonight. I waited for 5

hours with having 2 people ahead of me when I walked in and only one

abulance coming in while I was there and wasn't seen. I finally got

ticked and left. I had 2 5mg vicodins at home and just took them. The

bad part in this is that I called my Dr. at 10:30am for a new RX for

my percocets. I told the girl I had 2 left and was trying to avoid

going to the ER. 6pm rolled around and no call from the Dr. So, in a

few hours when his office opens I will be there waiting. If my Dr.

isn't there, I will raise hell till the Dr. who is there writes a

script. Do these Dr's realize that every attack damages the pancreas

even more?

I finally got in touch with Dr. Sutherland's office and they are

sending me an info packet. I can't wait to get this surgery done (I'm

keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to get it done). Until

then I guess I'm going to have to find another Dr as this one doesn't

seem to understand the problems of pancreatic attacks.

Hope everyone has a good day. Thanx for letting me vent. Back to

Dear ,

I'm so sorry that you're still going through so much garbage; that so many

folks on this list seem to be suffering at the hands of such incompetent and

seemingly insensitive medical care. Even having been through the same, it

still floors me that it exists. It makes me so angry.

Do you by any chance have access to a teaching hospital anywhere near you

? It seems that until I started seeing a physician at a teaching

hospital, I simply could not get adequate care. I saw several " private

practice " doctors, and not one of them seemed to be within 20 years of

contemporary thinking in regard to CP. They just all seemed so dreadfully

behind anything that I was able to learn on my own or had learned within my

first two months reading this list. I was fighting a constant battle trying

to educate my healthcare workers, while walking a fine line of trying to do

that, make sure I got semi-decent care, and didn't damage their ego's while

doing so.

At least I feel like, with the help I'm getting at the teaching hospital

(both from the physician, AND the pain management department), they are

up-to-snuff with me - hopefully more advanced, still remains to be seen - but

at least current in their thinking. AND contemporary enough in their thought

to be SYMPATHETIC, rather than so cold that they refuse to acknowledge the

suffering of an attack or what acute pain is like. It's been many, many

months since I've felt like I couldn't at least get hold of someone on staff

who would pre-admit me to the ER, not to mention that the care I got once IN

the ER has been inadequate. They just seem about a million years more

enlightened.

I don't know if the " teaching " hospital is the difference, or if it's just

this particular hospital, but it's the only thing that I can think of that is

the difference. I'd be curious if others find this differentiation as well.

I don't know if there's one near or around you , but I'd love it if

circumstances would allow you to check it out, since you acknowledge that

it's time to " shop " anyway. Good luck Ms. N'Awlins.

Peace,

Terry in KC

I hope that you were able to get the pain meds from the doc that you needed.

Sometime these people who work in the offices and the docs as well, don't

realize what the CP pain feels like. I be if they were in out shoes, they

would have all the meds they needed, without the hassle that we have to go

thru.

That must have been scary. I am sooooo glad that your doc picked up on

what was going on and got you straightened out. Good thoughts and

prayers coming your way so that you will continue to feel better.
