Graham is 15 months and severly autistic. Because of such severe

leaky gut issues and a family hx of food allergies, we have yet to

introduce dairy, eggs, fish, or nuts. His diet basically consists of:

chicken, turkey, beef, lamb

avocado, banana, cherries

carrots, green beans, squash, and peas

Anyone have any ideas for me? He basically does everything

separately at this point and he refuses to let me feed him anything.

He is extremely picky (no apples, pears, blueberries, peaches,

pineapple, broccoli, cauliflower etc) and he still has some texture

issues.

Thank you,

a

This sounds like a decent menu to me.

What are you hoping to feed him that he isn't currently eating?

I feel for you - you are to be commended for dealing with so much, and still

trying to find new ways to help him. The only idea that I can offer is to

perhaps investigate NAET to deal with the food allergies/sensitivities. NAET

is an alternative process that can eliminate the allergies/sensitivities,

while you work to heal the gut. It can give the body a break from

inflammation, and allow more SCD-legal foods while you continue to heal the

gut.

The only caveat is that you have to find a practitioner that works for you -

not all of them do. The first one we tried didn't work at all for us. After

seeing him for months, I left his practice thinking NAET was a hoax. A year

later, we tried it again with a different practitioner, and had wonderful

success. That's the unfortunate, frustrating thing about it, but if you can

find someone that can use it to give some improvement, it is definitely

worth it.

Best wishes,

Marilyn

I guess I'm looking for some ideas of what else to make him. I'd

like to add spinach but don't know how to do it. He won't eat it

directly. Is there a way to make " crackers " from it?

I guess I'm just bored. I feel like I make the same thing every

day and I'd like to add some variety for him.

Also, are there any other veggies that I'm missing?

Thanks,

I don' know what other therapies you are doing, but if you are not

familiar with RDI(Relationship Development Intervention), I would

highly recommend you look into it. You can learn about it at their

I know how you feel. My son is 8 and has been SCD for over 2

years. He eats most meats but prefers beef, carrots, celery,

peppers, green beans, peas. He does like most fruits, and we do use

eggs, nut flours, honey, and sometimes goat milk. But I DO know

what you mean about being bored. Both my kids prefer their foods

plain, their veggies raw (we did coooked only for 6 mos, but now

that raw is OK, they prefer that). I do feel like I give him the

same things all the time. But he is happy.

I do think that most kids eat the same things over and over. For

insance, many (NT) kids eat cereal every day for breakfast, pbj

sandwich every day for lunch, the same snacks, and often a limited

repertoire for dinner. Especially true for young children, your

son's age.

So my first advice is cut yourself some slack - if your child is

happy, don't be TOO worried about adding more.

That said, here are a couple of ideas, though they may not be new

thoughts for you:

Try hiding veggies in meats (burgers, meatloafs). You can grind up

cookked turkey, chicken in food processor with veggies, and/or get

raw ground poultry at the store. I have made meatballs with

spinach, ground turkey, salt. I've also added spinach, cauliflower,

squash (one at a time) to burgers or esp. meatloaf.

Zucchini is a fairly easy one to hide in things. Generally, cook,

puree/mash, then mix into meat.

Another generalization: add a tiny bit of something new to

something he likes (like a little applesauce to mashed avocado?)

One more: figure out what textures he likes, and add new foods that

fit that preference. NOt always easy. You can also try the

following approach:

First, he has to sit with the new food on a separate plate next to

his meal plate. When that is mastered without gagging or

complaining, a piece of the new food sits on his plate thruout the

meal. Next, he allows you to touch it to his lips. Next, he licks

it, or puts a bite into his mouth. Finally, he has to eat one

bite. Then two, etc. You can add or subtract steps depending on

how averse your child is.

Good luck.
