The 2% rule: There is a rule that allows some ingredients that constitute less

than 2% of

the total weight or volume unnecessary to report on the ingredient list. This

can include

sugar and other illegal ingredients, since these do not fall under the list of

usual allergens.

Store-bought products often pass through many sets of hands before they are put

in the

final package. For example, some juice concentrates can be made in one plant and

then

shipped to another plant where water is added and then they are bottled. The

final

producer can " honestly " say they did not add any illegals but what about the

first producer

of the concentrate. The original concentrate does not even have to be made in

the same

country as the final bottler.

Commercial producers are not bound to report some of the ingredients listed in

their

foods. They can use processing aides, enzymes etc., that are used in the

production of the

food but are not technically an ingredient. When you make foods for your

children you

know " exactly " what you are putting into it.

Buying foods such as cookies that are not listed on this site as suitable SCD™

products,

can lead to trouble. Some producers may unintentionally use illegal ingredients.

For

example, a commercial producer uses honey that is not pure (i.e., cut with corn

syrup) but

includes honey on the ingredient list. The end result is that your child is

unknowingly

ingesting illegals.

Some companies blatantly lie about the ingredients in their products.

Hi Darci,

> I am curious how the legals are determined............

The commercial juices that have been listed either in BTVC or on the

list were checked out by Elaine.

I know

grape,

Just curious on how it's all

> determined for the legal list.

Just calling the company won't necessarily give you an accurate

answer - you could be talking to a secretary (who is " reciting " a

rote answer), you could be talking to someone who doesn't know of

recent formulation changes (which happened recently for a brand of

bacon and isn't always reflected on labels) etc. Sometimes there

are also different formulations depending on where you live - but

that depends on the product. So Elaine found some juice products

that are okay to use. Other than that the best thing to do is

follow the instructions in BTVC for determining what is legal.

Beech-Nut also said they add nothing to their baby

food when I called them. A lab analysis found 3.8%

sugar added. Maybe other companies are truthful but I

don't trust them anymore.

Flor,

Where did you send the food to be analyzed?

I bet there are a lot of people on the list who have favorite store-bought items

(like tomato sauce, etc.) who continue to use these products because they

" look " legal on the labels, who might really benefit from having those products

tested.

The lab we used is:

Microbac labs

www.microbac.com

request a saccharides test, we paid about $100 for

each test

it would be nice if everyone who can send samples

share their results, so we don't duplicate efforts.

we are still waiting for the results on Beech-Nut

stage 1 Beef for starch added.

Perhaps when someone gets results from a lab such as this, we can load the

results onto the pecanbread website, so that others may see it, and we can

build up a database with members results?

The KNUDSEN line of " Just Juices " does not have pear juice among the

choices.

I don't know of any legal store-bought brands of pear juice.

Sorry.
