For years I've worked in MRI. And I always try to make light of things when

I have a large patient. Unfortunately, a patient does not have to be that

overweight to make the examination more uncomfortable. But alot of times

when a larger patient looks at the bore of the magnet and asks me, " How will

I ever fit? " I tell them that I have a nice big container of talcum powder

over in the corner! LOL Of course I can say that because it's obvious that

I am in comraderie with the patient. But I am also very empathetic if I

happen to have a patient that is unable to fit, or is too uncomfortable to

do the exam. Some patients due to the pressure from fitting in there, have

dyspnea because there's no place for their chest to go, and I always just

end things immediately and the patient and I discuss options. It's very sad

that sometimes equipment has to have these types of limits, but

unfortunately due to physics, this cannot be helped. And to go to Open MRI

is almost useless. People don't understand that, but it's true. And it's

hard to work in a modality where you barely fit into the maching yourself.

My patients ask me all the time if " I fit in there. " I tell them yes I do,

but it's not easy!

LOL, I really try hard and am successful in handling patients who either

know they are claustrophobic or find out that they are after the start of

the exam. One time when I was in the scanner, this strange feeling came

over me, and I started to panic, and I thought, " Oh my gosh, is this what

claustrophobia feels like? " I think it was because I HAD gained weight and

I was more squished in there than I had ever been before. But I just told

myself that it's mind over matter---if I didn't mind, it didn't matter. But

you're right, I wanted out of there ASAP!

Music hath charms to sooth the savage breast. Just depends on what type of

music you like. I always call it music, I just say we have too much

percussion and not enough strings. LOL

No, not at all. We were just talking about what kinds of tests were

uncomfortable to undergo when you're large. MRI is one of the biggies, even

if you're not claustrophobic. LOL
