Guest guest
Sheila, Thank you for the response. I didn't think anyone was listening. I found out what may have caused this. She had a lot of pumpkin seeds one day for lunch about 3 days ago. I think I was told somewhere that carrot juice and pumpkin seeds were natural detox foods. The same kind of thing happened when I first introduced carrot juice to her. It definitely could be die-off. She has become extremely out of tune and hyper since she passed all this. I gave her epsom salts baths. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks. Guest guest
Sheila, Kali eats, eggs, chicken, raw apples, raw celery, arrot juice, peanut butter brownies, spicy walnut cookies, welch's grape juice, tropicana OJ, water, jello, and sometimes steak and raw carrots. We use organic fruits & veggies & " free range " meat. She was on the homemade yogurt but, I ran out of starter. I was wondering if the stonyfield farms brand is legal to use as a starter? She won't expand her tastes so we seem to be stuck right here. She would not do the intro. diet and hasn't started with cooked fruits and veggies because of texture reasons. She has never had D problems until just a bout recently but seems to have bounced back. Depends on the ingredients and bacterial cultures. If memeory serves me correctly I think it contains bifidum bacteria which is not one of the suggested strains. With the diarrhea you could try making the food a bit easier to digest and see if that helps : peel the apples, destring the celery - until her bowels are better. Let us know how she's doing. Guest guest
The diareah has passed but, I am still wondering about how much stool she actually passed. It was just way too much for just a little girl. I wonder if maybe she was constipated and when I gave her the seeds, they helped her go.She doesn't get a lot of fiber in her diet as you can see from the foods I listed. How can I get her to eat new things without gagging and throwing up? Jenn & Kali 95% SCD 4 months. In general avoid anything that has bifid in its name. Do not use the eating batches to ferment other batches or undesirable strains will creep in or the existing bacteria can mutate. (from BTVC) Carol F. Guest guest
Hi Jenn, Bifidum tends to overgrow - which causes all sorts of gastro trouble.... We don't want any bacteria to take over, we're looking for balance. See http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/bifidus.htm Some asked this recently and there were a number of responses that confirmed it happening. You can search for these posts by putting either bifidum or bifidus in the search box at the top of the page when reading emails at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/messages Sheila, SCD 55 mos, 21 yrs UC mom of , SCD 40 mos > why isn't bifidum a recommended strain of bacteria to use in the > yogurt starter? Guest guest
Hi Jenn, Does she like pancakes? You could try making the sneaky pancakes to get her to up her veggie amount. The recipe is at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html under the pancake section. Increasing the veggetable amount will increase her fiber and should do it without causing diarrhea from an overload of fiber as the seeds did. Passing that much so fast is not a good thing. It may have cleared her out but it won't give her body to get nutrients etc. from the food. And she can become dehydrated. She doesn't like honey and I don't know what to sub for the syrup. They have to be almond pancakes and the taste needs to be covered up with the syrup. Jenn & Elaine wrote that bowel issues can swing back and forth between constipation and diarrhea while healing. It would be good if you can increase vegetables (peeled and cooked). As in the sneaky pancake suggestion I made. Also increasing the amount of fluids she receives. It is important to peel and cook fruit and veggies because since she isn't ready for the harder to digest fiber it will feed microbes and worsen the constipation. It is good to hear that the diet is helping with the constipation. Is she taking any supplements? Calcium, magnesium, vitamin C etc.. Some enzymes may help, hopefully some people will make suggestions. Sheila

I simmer strawberries or blueberries etc. until soft and then run them through a food press to remove most of the seeds... You can add honey at this point to sweeten to taste. I simmer strawberries or blueberries etc. until soft and then run them through a food press to remove most of the seeds... You can add honey at this point to sweeten to taste. If you want it very smooth you could put it in a food processor or blender before the food mill (or seive/strainer with small holes) Sheila > I can get her to eat pancakes every other week once maybe. Guest guest
Hi Jenn, > This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if you can use only > acidophilus (crushed tabs) for the yogurt culture? No, you need Streptococcos thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus to make a true yoghurt. Elaine said it was okay to also have L. acidophilus or L. casei (as in the GI ProHealth starter.) Guest guest
Sheila, I tried to sneak some zucchini in my muffins but, she still won't eat any of my baked goods except for the peanut butter brownies and the spicy walnut cookies. She picks the nuts out of the cookies and leaves the rest. She also just picks at the brownies but, eats more of them than the cookies. She does drink an extreme amt. everyday. Peeing at least 20 x's a day- not exaggerating! I know her constipation can't be caused from not drinking enough. We haven't put her on any supplements yet. I am trying to find the right ones and the right dose. How do you know if your child needs supplements? Can't some supplements get held up in the body and make you sick? I tried to get her tested to see if she needs more of something (vitamins & minerals). I cannot find a Dr. that will do this. We cannot use any Dr.'s that don't take medicaid because we can't afford treatment. It's been extremely difficult to keep her on this diet because it is more expensive than the traditional american food we were eating before. I can't even get the yogurt starter right now. Thank you for all your help. Anyone respond.
