Guest guest
Dear Heidi, I'm sorry that you're experiencing these symptoms, I know it's very distressing. And you're correct, there are a lot of smart folks 'round here with lots of experience! It sounds like, as a couple of folks suggested, it could be hypoglycemia - and Mark is right too, it could be an anxiety attack... That helps, doesn't it! You should know which it was based on a few factors, one of them being your anxiety level... Did you have an unusually large amount of stress each of the times that this has happened, or has it been at times/places when you should have been at least relatively relaxed or not " over-stressed " about anything in particular?? If it was kind of like having a heart attack, with dizziness, stomach upset, profuse sweating/chills, intense chest pain and shortness of breath as well - it may have been an anxiety or panic attack. If it were hypoglycemia, you wouldn't necessarily have the shortness of breath or chest tightness/pain. You WOULD probably have felt extremely faint, as though you were going to pass out soon, and be very, VERY shaky, almost trembling in fact, and the condition worsens as time passes until you've gotten something in your system. Your timing - always in the afternoon between meals - indicates that you may be experiencing a hypoglycemic attack. With a panic attack, it's intense immediately (it hits like a truck, and often one feels " frozen " , helpless, immobilized) - and gets BETTER within a few minutes rather than worse, and it wouldn't matter whether you ingested food/juice or not, as time is the only thing (sans medication) that relieves it. It's interesting, I never knew that there were so many similarities - but there are quite a few differences, too. I hope that helps some - we're so good at confusing one another Heidi. Haha. I hope I didn't do that TOO much today. Either way, it definitely needs to be addressed. I know you'll make an appointment to do that very thing right away. Peace, Terry << Hi all, We've got so many learned people in this group that I thought maybe someone might have an idea of what these symptoms might indicate. This has happened to me about four times in the last month or so. I start to feel really light-headed, dizzy and like I'm feverish, but my temp is only 97.8. Soon to follow is a feeling of forgetfulness, or an anxious feeling that I've forgotten something, sort of like I'm disoriented. Tonight I felt this way right before dinner. After I ate, I felt fine. Otherwise.... pancreas, stomach, head, etc., all feels fine. I ate lunch around 11:30 and had some fruit an hour before dinner, with plenty of water and tea all day. The other times it's happened was either right before dinner or in the mid-afternoon, a couple hours after lunch. I guess I need to schedule an appointment with my doctor to look into this, but just hadn't thought about it until tonight when it happened again. Since it's happened again it seems to be more than just an isolated incident. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks for your help. Guest guest
Heidi, go get tested for hypoglycemia or diabetes. What you are describing is an hypoglycemia attack (low bloodsugar) to a T. The eating making it better is a sure thing for getting rid of this. You might want to consider eating a mid-afternoon snack. Kimber -- Kimber hominid2@... Guest guest
My educated guess would be related to blood sugar. Probably low rather than high. but its just a guess. a out of whack thyroid can cause an assortment of probs. but eating should not affect that.I would definitely mention it to my doc. If you have a way of checking your blood sugar I would do that next time it happens. ...Of course it could also be our favorite diagnosis... " stress " or anxiety. Isn't that the standard answer when the truth is they don't know. Take care. > >Reply-To: pancreatitis >To: pancreatitis >Subject: Some unusual symptoms >Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 01:28:10 -0000 > >Hi all, > >We've got so many learned people in this group that I thought >maybe someone might have an idea of what these symptoms >might indicate. Guest guest
Dear Heidi, It sounds like your having mild painic attacks. 1mg of Ativan would probably fix you up within 5-10 minutes. But you should describe what's happening to you in as much detail as possible. A smart doc will give you 1mg Ativan PRN as needed. It's a mild anti-anxiety and should clear up the problem almost instantly. That helps, doesn't > it! Thanks Kimber, , Mark, Terry and all, After reviewing your responses I've eliminated the idea that it could be a panic/anxiety attack. There was really no stress or panic related to any of my activities prior to these occurances. Doing some laundry one day, drawing, or preparing dinner...ho-hum, yawn....not anything stressful about this! Life has been blissfully stress-free lately. Also didn't experience any hot/cold episodes or chest pains, I just felt faint and overheated and dizzy, very disoriented. Food seemed to be the cure, it went away as soon as I had dinner. Kimber, I usually do snack in the afternoon, some fruit or yogurt, but I was out all afternoon and just didn't think about it. I'll have to remember to bring something with me, thanks! I don't have a way to test my blood sugar levels, but do think that I'll have to get my doctor to look into this. Question is, if I'm not having one of these dizzy, faint spells when the tests are done (whatever the tests are), will they show anything? And is hypoglycemia a predilection of diabetes, like I think, or could it just be a temporary problem? I know my doctor can answer all these questions, but it may take me a while to get an appointment , and I'd just like to know some more facts now other than later. And yes, I'll get my search engine going and study up. Thanks, again, for your help. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth - SC hhessgriffeth@... Guest guest
Dear Heidi You sound like you are having a problem with your sugar levels. Your Doctor can do a fasting BSL (blood sugar level) This will tell him what your sugar levels have been doing for the past three months or so. Get him to check your cholestrol levels as well, diabetics have a hard time controlling these too. Here in Australia most health clinics and chemists can check your blood sugar levels too. Get it checked between 1-2 hours after eating. With adult onset diabetes you usually have trouble keeping your blood sugar levels low, rather than them going too low, so if that is the problem, and it certainly sounds like it, then it will most probably be related to your pancreatic problems. rather than your basic type 2 diabetes. I am a diabetic, when I go low I have two different ways I go. When I go low fast, I get the shakes, and feel as though I am having a panic attack. When I go Low slow, I get hot, feel as though I am not getting enough oxygen, feel faint or sleepy. Hope this helps you Heidi and anyone else who may be experiencing the same problem. If it is low BSL then having six small meals a day minimum will help, a meal can be as simple as a glass of fruit juice in between your main meals, I find this helps when I am low, but not hungry or having trouble keeping anything down. I also keep a bag of jelly beans or similar glucose lolly with me at all times.
Guest guest
Dear Heidi, I have had the same questions as you in the past and now. I am lightheaded often and I get cold chills and start to shake too. It is a very awful and scary feeling. I hope that there is something that can be done for this. I will pray for you. Thinking of you and hope you are doing well. HUGS,

Guest guest
Hey Heidi: Haven't read all the posts yet so I don't know waht other responses you have gotten. But, it sure sounds to me like your blood sugar is dropping low. Especially if eating makes you feel better. Have you ever actually checked it with a glucometer when you get that feeling? Although that might not " tell " you either. I know in my case and this is what the doc said, that sometimes when I would feel like I had symptoms of low blood sugar it still be " within the normal range " according to the " charts " but as far as my metabolism, it might have been low for me and I would experience symptoms before it would document to be low according to lab values. Just my two cents worth. Take care Kaye Fortenberry kfortenb@... Guest guest
Heidi, You are not allowed to get sick girl !!!!!! Is your blood sugar getting too low ? Sometimes fruit or sugars will actually make your blood sugar drop faster than usual. Also how about your blood pressure ? have you looked up any of your meds to see if those symptoms are side effects ? Have you tried anything new lately or are you on any new meds ? Anything new in your diet ? This is the first night it many weeks that I have made it home before 9 pm. I am sooo excited to be home during the day light. I hope that you find out why you are getting these symptoms. Sometimes if my sphincter of Oddi goes into spasm I get the dizziness thing and I hate it. But if your abdomen feels ok, I doubt that it is a pancreatic spasm. If it happens much more, get to the doc for some blood work young lady ! Guest guest
If you have low blood sugar problems, it will show up with test even if you aren't having an episode at that time. Yes, hypoglycemia can eventually turn into Diabetes. I haven't heard of it being a temporary problem at any time, but that doesn't mean it can't be. I'd check with the doctor. If you are having hypoglycemic attacks, you need to make your snacks protein based or you'll just go into another attack if you eat quick carbohydrates (causes the panc to send out too much insulin - which is what causes hypoglycemia). So have some sort of protein with it. Kimber -- Kimber hominid2@... Southwest Representative Pancreatitis Association, International
Guest guest
Having CP puts each of us at particular risk for Diabetes - I hope that both of you will be checked soon, and that you'll further be able to start testing your own blood sugar levels at home on your own so that you can determine - immediately - if your sugars are low and need to be raised. It is an extremely simple process, (both checking yourself, as WELL as raising your blood glucose levels) and there is no good reason NOT to be checking. It's simple, easy, pain-free and most importantly, can save you from great, unnesecary medical trauma now and in the future. , you're especially describing an attack of hypoglycemia, and it's nothing to mess with. If left unattended, it can lead to seizures (NO fun) and coma, ultimately death. Please bring this up with your PCP ASAP! Just ask WIlfred Brimley. " Test your blood, and test it often. " Haha. Peace, Terry << Dear Heidi, I have had the same questions as you in the past and now. I a m lightheaded often and I get cold chills and start to shake too. It is a very awful and scary feeling.
