Guest guest
Dear Carolyn,You might try running tepid water on them in the shower and then graduallyincrease the heat to as hot as you can stand it.This works great for bug bites and leaves you without the itch for a long time.It might work for hives too if it releases the histamine. It can't hurt to try as long as you don't burn yourself !!If you have a handheld this works great.LeeI'm about to go crazy here with hives. They thought it was the aldactone they put me on the week before, and so told me to stop taking it. I did, but the hives are getting worse. Now, instead of patches on my forearms, it's one solid red mass, and the itching is constant and unrelenting whereas it had been just every so often.I can't handle anti-histamines, so that's out. Hydrocortisone cream had no effect whatsoever. Any ideas? Anyone else hit this?Regards,Carolyn B. in SC

Guest guest
Bummer (as to the allergy test results). Did you have a blood test (RAST), or just the standard scratch tests? Our allergist - who walks on water - uses the blood test exclusively. He's the only one who has managed to get any relief for my spouse who has had respiratory allergies since at least puberty (with at least 2 major attacks a month until we reached this doc). I can't even remember the last allergy attack since we found him - it has been that long. The lidocaine didn't help my daughter's liver related itching, but has been helpful for hives. I think what we have is Solarcaine - but it's not one of the products I've paid attention to brand names on. , Mom to 18 yo daughter UC 6/95, PSC 3/09To: Sent: Thursday, April 2, 2009 4:09:16 PMSubject: Re: Hives > > Have you tried a lidocaine based lotion (a topical anesthetic often sold for sunburns)? > > As to the underlying cause, have you been tested for food allergies? ============ ========= ========= ====== -- A lidocaine based lotion sounds good to me right now!! Anything that would stop this itching. I can see how the lidocaine would do that. I've never used any before (I always used to put noxema on my sunburns!). Is there any particular brand you find better than another? Regarding the allergies -- When they did extensive allergy testing on me some years ago, they found I was allergic to absolutely nothing!!! I just had the slightest reaction to the histamine itself. So, I really don't think this is allergy related though (heaven knows!) I could certainly be wrong about that. Thanks for the suggestions! Guest guest
> > Dear Carolyn, > You might try running tepid water on them in the shower and then > gradually > increase the heat to as hot as you can stand it. ================= Lee, that sounds good, except for one small thing -- it's been years since I've been able to tolerate very warm or hot water in the shower! It sets off my " liver itch " (as we call it) from head to toe for several days. I can take only cool or barely lukewarm showers. In fact, if I just start to get a bit warm anytime, the liver itch kicks in. That's why we keep the ceiling fans going here all year around. So, I think I'll pass on this one, but I sure appreciate your suggestion! Regards, Carolyn B in SC

Did you have a blood test (RAST), or just the standard scratch tests? =================== -- Since I've never had any allergy attacks of any kind (except very mild poison ivy as a kid), they did only the scratch tests, but there were about 40 or 50 of them! Even my asthma is not allergy based; it's exercise induced and also triggered by reflux. Thanks again for your suggestions! I'll send hubby to the drugstore after supper. Guest guest
the only time I have ever had hives was from strep throat. I had fought them for over 2 weeks, going to the ER, regular doc, finally I went to a dermatologist who asked if I had had a sore throat within the past few weeks, got a shot of antibiotic, was better within hours. Hope this helps, Jackie
