Dear ,

I don't understand what you mean when you say you can't schedule surgery

until your package is approved. I am also hoping to have the MGB ASAP, and I

am still at the beginning of the process, going to my PCP next week, hoping

for his approval. I thought that getting insurance approval was the last

step, and surgery could be scheduled once that had been approved. If you've

been approved for over a month, what could the hold up be? Please let me

know if you find anything out. Thanks!

I just talked to Barbara and asked if I could get a surgery date.

She

said my package had not been approved. I asked her what dates were

available and she said she couldn't let me know. She said she had

alot of packages that were higher priority because there packages

arrived first. I understand that, but after she told me I might have

to wait until July, I almost freaked!! Do they have that many that I

can't schedule in the next month. I think Dr. R is going out of town

but I thought I could get my package in and at least have surgery

before he left. Please give me words of wisdom. Also, if anyone

knows the process as to how the " package approval " is handled please

let me know tht too!

MGB Hopeful (hopefully in this lifetime!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

BCBS approved 4-26-00

Vert impatient too BTW :0)

Nope, she wants all the paperwork, all the medical stuff IN plus the

insurance approval BEFORE she gives out dates. She stressed that at

clinic too.

Hi Deb,

Dr. R wants all the data together minus the blood work and EKG

( these 2 tests must be with in 30 days of the op) If not you can

have them done in the hospital)

An approved package is one that is gone over by Dr. R making sure

you are a canidate for the surgery. EXAMPLE:IE if you have LUPUS

you are not a canidate for this surgery. That is why he needs your

medical history along with Approval from your pcp, a family letter

supporting you and your diet history......etc plus the other 9

steps.. .All these must be approved. Dr. R is VERY THorough! These

procedures are requested from Dr. R and must be done at his time

frame so nothing is over looked, for your benefit. I understand he

will not be back til july. I know he had numerous packages waiting in

the office.

So, I hope I helped, be patient hang in there, find out all you can

about the MGB and stay on the list it's a great source of info. But

most importantly its all part of the procedure to a " new life "

Ok all new people....

The first thing you need to do is read the manual at least two or

three times. It explains the whole procedure really well. You must

complete all the steps on page 6 or 7 (whatever the page is these

days) and submit the " entire " package to Dr. Rutledge for approval

BEFORE a surgery date is given. That includes letters of support

from your PCP, family and your letter of understanding. I know of

some cases where Dr. Rutledge has not accepted the letters the

patients or spouses wrote because they were not specific enough. So

yes, he does review the entire package before giving a surgery date.

Be patient and gain all the knowledge you can during this wait time.

I know if feels like forever but it is so good that Dr R. is so

thorough and wants us to be so educated in making the decision.

Trust him.... he knows what he is doing.

Read and Reread and Reread the manual. You will be surprised of the

new stuff you learn each time you do. I still reread the manual a

lot.

, how disappointing for you! I remember being very eager to have the

MGB done also. Can you use this time for some positive things that may need

to be done in preparation for your " new life " after the MGB? Maybe you have

a project or two that you'd like to get out of the way? I used the waiting

time prior to my surgery to clear out closets, drawers, odds and ends...to

sew, to knit, to mend...to donate items to various charities...to " organize "

my nest for the homecoming from surgery. I also bought, learned how to

use/cook/make some of the " new " liquids/foods that I would be using after the

MGB. I guess that I sort of treated the waiting period prior to surgery as a

type of pregnancy. It gave me something to focus on besides waiting and it

also cleared a lot of junk out of our home and our lives that needed to be

cleared up! That's pretty pedestrian advice, I know...but it helped me stay

focused on the positive side of the ledger: I would be having the MGB and I

could be more prepared for both the surgery and my return home if I just put

my energies toward positive projects rather than worrying and fretting.

Don't get me wrong, woman! I still fretted and worried! But with the

preparation tasks, I was able to do much less worrying and fretting and more

planning and celebrating! Love to you! Dee in MI. (MGB 16 Dec 99)
