Guest guest
Robbie, My sister told me that she smelled Peyton once. She knew he was sensitive to smells so went all around trying to find the source and finally decided it was him!! I think Shaw believes that it comes from intestinal dysbiosis (bacteria and yeast) Especially if it has an ammonia type smell to it. You might try sending an email to him at Great Plains Lab or give them a call. You might consider getting another OAT test. Best of luck to you! Guest guest
Hi Robbie, Apparently some people can't smell ketosis breath so it could well be that. I'd get some other people who care about him to speak up close to him and ask them quietly if they can smell a fruity, alcoholic smell on his breath. If they can it's probably ketosis which can be treated with more carbs, i.e. juice, fruit, veges. You can check for ketosis by buying Ketostix over the counter at the pharmacy (well you can here in New Zealand anyway) and testing his urine. Is he losing weight? Is he getting dehydrated? Any other symptoms? Guest guest
I was concerned about ketosis so I tested him this am and no ketones detected. I'll test again after school and several more times to be sure... No other symptoms at all! That's the odd part - he looks fantastic. He's no longer anemic, color and weight are good, energy good - he's doing great! I did catch him brushing his teeth this am without toothpaste... I have no idea if that was a one time thing or something he does daily, so I brushed his teeth today and will monitor that closely. He typically eats eggs for breakfast and the protocel he takes for the yeast smells awful on his breath, too... so maybe that combo just gave him an odor and he wasn't getting rid of it. Bouts of die off for me can cause odour problems. Might sound weird but when it was really bad I made a paste of baking soda and water and applied to the 'pits. Guest guest
If you are having the same problem after starting the yogurt, this might confirm the idea of tetox since the probiotics in the yogurt can cause die off. I bathed this am instead of before bed, I gave him pancakes instead of eggs for breakfast and I brushed his teeth very thoroughly before he left for school and his teacher told me today that he still had an odor and another kid said something to him today. I'm just so sad I don't know what to do... she even consulted with the school nurse which is exactly what I don't need because they might blame the diet or something... I just don't need any more issues to deal with ya know? I'm sorry you're having the same problem. Guest guest
Without smelling your son, I couldn't tell you if it was ketosis, but my daughter's (who went into ketosis and metabolic acidosis) smell was more like a fruity medicinal smell. Her urine smelt the same way. Doctors tend to recognize this smell so you might take him to your pediatrician and see if he notices the odor. Also they can test his HCO3 level to see if they are decreased, and if they are they can supplement for that. With this group, there are probably other non serious things that cause odors, but ketosis and acidosis can be dangerous as it was in my daughter's case. So it is important that you check this out. Guest guest
Well, this is probably worthless for your situation. But, just on the odd chance that it might help, I thought I would share. I've been noticing a horrible odor around my house lately. It smells like cat urine. Finally, I figured out it was my feet. I have a walnut tree at my front door that is shedding its leaves. I've been tracking them in, they've gotten in my shoes, and my feet reek to high heaven. It's been very embarassing to explain to people. Are they sure the odor is coming from his mouth?
