Guest guest
Dear Everyone: I am writing because my daughter has been grinding her teeth at night. I wondered if anyone knew what caused this? I have UC and have been on the diet since last December with tremendous success for relief of my symptoms. (My doctor told me it was incurable). I have been trying to put my daughter who is seven years old, very active and ADHD with chronic stomach aches since she was around 18 months on SCD. She is probably 80% compliant. Things have definitely improved but I am still working on 100% compliance. Its been especially difficult since we have displaced by the hurricane. We are from New Orleans. Living in other household who are not compliant is not easy but my sisters have tried to be supportive so I am very lucky and blessed. Anyway, since we are all now sleeping together in the same room I've heard pretty severe teeth grinding. I remember there was a discussion about this a year ago but I do not remember the recommendations. My daughter is currently on cod liver oil, multivitamin, and calcium supplement. She has tested positive to being allergic to a number of foods on SCD which has complicated things. My thought is if I get her on the diet I shouldn't worry about her allergies to fruit but still keep her away from her cow's milk allergy such as the homemade yogurt and cheeses. I had IGe testing done but can't get the results because of the evacuation. Her results are from skin scratch test. She tested positive to squash, watermelon, orange, peas, string beans, peanuts, cashews, cow's milk, casein, mushrooms, and some more but are not on scd. Any thoughts on her food allergies would be welcomed. Thank you, Eileen
Guest guest
Hi Eileen, This issue was just discussed on the enzymesandautism listserv. These were some of the possible explanations: improper zinc/copper ratios cal/mag deficiency yeast in sinuses zinc deficiency magnesium deficiency constipation parasites My best guess would be to try magnesium since you are giving your daughter calcium. Calcium really needs to be taken with magnesium, also potassium. Kirkman's has some good legal magnesium supplements. If she's constipated, try magnesium citrate, if she has normal stools, try magnesium glycinate. Magnesium oxide firms stools. I am so sorry about your displacement. I hope that things go back to normal for you soon. Do not be afraid to ask for help of any kind. I know I for one would be happy to help you in any way and I'm sure I " m not the only one. Guest guest
Dear tte: Thank you for your response. She is taking 500mg of Calcium that has 100mg Magnesium in it. Is that the right ratio? We've actually run out of the supplement two days ago and ordered some that should be arriving this Friday at my sister's. Thank you for your offer of help. I feel I am one of the lucky ones because I have family to support me. I wish I would have taken some additional gear from my house like yogurt maker, ice cream maker and my blender but I think I was so busy to hurricane preparations for the house that I wasn't thinking clearly. I also think my house is ok. I am only 9 blocks from the river (furtherest point away from the Lake in the city) and I don't think the water reached it. I feel incredibly blessed and thankful. Hopefully, in about two weeks I will be able to get into New Orleans and get some gear. Thank you and take care, Eileen

Guest guest
Dear tte: I've now check to see if she is getting any potassium and doesn't look like it so maybe that's it. We have not been eating bananas in our normal volume because of course they need to over ripen and I used to keep them in the freezer for smoothies. Do you think it should be given in a supplement since I was giving her a calcium supplement? I plan to start the calcium again once I get a refill. Thanks, Eileen
Guest guest
We use all kinds of supplements but are taking Calcium Citrate for teeth grinding. Also sometimes when my son is low in magnesuim he teeth grinds. I rub Magnesuim Sulfate Cream on him (which is an epsom salt cream basically) made by Kirkman's. www.kirkmanlabs.com in the search type in magnesium sulfate cream. This is much easier than giving epsom salt baths. -Crystal Sasha's Mom > > Dear Sasha: > > I knew I had heard about something like that. What supplement have you been using? Guest guest
Dear Nella: I have been trying to give her enzymes. I have no fenol and an off brand from the store that is supposed to be for vegetables. I am not very consistent with them. When she gets a smoothie I give her the no fenol. I need to start being more consistent. I need to do more research on the enzymes. I've been giving her carlson cod liver oil. I think its helpin with her stomach and her eye problems. I'm not sure really. I need more time she's only been taking it for about a month. How does enzymes help with food allergies. Does it not allow undigested food into the blood stream? I know this is what causes food allergies. Thank you for your input. Eileen

There is a book about enzymes and autism. The book is by the same woman that sponsors the site in the link. I ordered the book on Amazon. Do not remember the exact name. I will look it up for you if you want . Nella eb-psa-list@... wrote: Dear Nella: I have been trying to give her enzymes. Guest guest
Dear Eileen, Sorry to just be getting back to you now, but it looks like you got a lot of responses to your question! I don't think 100 mg of magnesium is enough. Some people say 2:1 ratio, calcium to magnesium, others say 1:1 calcium to magesium and I have even heard 1:2 calcium to magnesium. I would try about 400-500 mg of magnesium each day. If her stools get really loose, try a different form of magnesium, glycinate or oxide. You can go up to 1000 mg of calcium supplement. If you start the yogurt again, go back to 500 mg. Guest guest
Yes, you can give the potassium in a supplement. It might not be the answer to the teeth grinding but low potassium can cause leg cramps. Supplementing with cal/mag can throw off the cal/pot and mag/pot ratios so it is a good idea to give a source or supplement of potassium. Best wishes, tte > >Reply-To: pecanbread >To: pecanbread > >Subject: Re: Re: teeth grinding and food allergies >Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2005 14:25:49 -0400 > >Dear tte: > >I've now check to see if she is getting any potassium and doesn't look like >it so maybe that's it.
