Guest guest
Talking about stool and various poop-related topics is part of managing the disease, whatever the level and nature it takes for each of us. The condition of stool, color, texture and odor are important. Many here have extensive experience with the disease, and your description may bring to mind either a solution, or at least some comfort and encouragement. Actually, I feel most fortunate that stool issues and reflux are the only active symptoms I have to contend with. Hope you gain some aid in managing your symptoms. MLockridge > Okay - I'm embarrassed to ask this question but I'm gonna ask it anyway. I have had problems with diarrhea off and on(more on than off) for some time now. When I have it, the stool has a very strange, disgusting odor. The best way I can describe the odor is that it almost has a metallic odor to it. It's totally unlike any normal smelly poop odor. Sorry to be so graphic and disgusting but I am just wondering if this could be related to pancreas problems. When I have diarrhea, it's not the same as when you have an upset stomach or virus. I don't have any lower stomach pain or cramps associated with it at all. It's not uncommon for me to have to 6-8 times a day. When I had the panc attack on Thursday, I had had pretty bad diarrhea since Tuesday. I really felt fine so I didn't worry about it. I did take an immodium Thursday morning because the diarrhea was becoming quite bothersome with so many trips to the bathroom. It was about 2 hours after taking the immodium that the panc attack hit. > > > > > >

Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for the answers. As usual they have brought another question to mind. Please forgive me for being graphic but I am feel as though I am searching for pieces to the puzzle of my problems. It is seeming more and more like the things I thought were all separate issues may really fit more together than I realized. I noticed Ellen said in her post below that she uses questran for diarrhea because it " absorbs all of the free flowing bile in the GI tract. " I have noticed when I have diarrhea that in addition to the awful metallic type smell, it is very yellow. It looks very much the color of the bile that I sometimes throw up. I'm a little confused. I thought that since my body was obviously producing plenty of bile, that must mean my pancreas was working well. Now, I'm wondering if my thinking was correct. Does the fact that there's lots of bile in my stool (actually sometimes it seems it is nothing but bile) mean anything at all? Re: disgusting question > > Okay - I'm embarrassed to ask this question but I'm gonna ask it > anyway. I have had problems with diarrhea off and on(more on than > off) for some time now. Guest guest
That kind of diarrhea is a symptom and side effect of Pancreaitis. Usually over the counter medicines aren't strong enough to stop it. Sometimes the pain starts before it and other times there is no pain at all. But the stench is a symptom of faulty enzyme activity in the pancreas. I had it for a year and 1/2 until they finally sent me to a GI guy who identified cp immediately and took a blood test and cat scan. just to confirm his diagnosis. In that year and 1/2 I lost 25 pounds and most of all of the nourishment of the food I had eaten. Lynnear

Guest guest
, all literature I've read and people I've talked to say the diahhrea associated with pancreatitis is really bad and really foul smelling, to put it bluntly. I know mine is and has been ever since I've started having problems with my pancreas. The gas associated with it is just as bad. I always feel sorry for anyone using a restroom after me when I have episodes of diahhrea or gas like that. In fact, I had an episode of this today after lunch. One more food crossed off my list of edibles. Kimber -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@... Guest guest
Kimber, Thanks again for the info. I just finished reading a really in-depth article talking about difficult it is to diagnose early mild chronic pancreatitis. It was saying that when you've progressed to the point that changes can be seen on film (x-ray, CT, mrcp) diagnosis is pretty easy. According to this article, sometimes it takes quite some time for the changes to become evident. Guest guest
Lynnear, Thanks for the info. I didn't even mention the diarrhea to the GI when I last saw him in May. It's kind of embarrassing to say " Gee doc, my poop smells really bad and weird. " I guess I'll tell him when I see him next time.
