Hey Shari, how are you doing since your surgery? Have you started adding

soft foods yet? Good to see you posting. :-)

Actually, my surgeon had me starting solid foods at 4 weeks. I have tried lots

of various foods and have not had anything react badly except some sweet stuff

early on.

I have had meat, fresh salad, (even Chinese food tonight for dinner).

The only problem I have had is drinking too much water at the wrong time (during

or after eating) - I had a couple of instances where I just totally forgot I had

the surgery and gulped down water when I was thirsty while eating - not good

since there is no place for the water to go.

Bottom line is that where it was difficult to walk 1-2 block pre-op, I now walk

40 minutes and then 'cool off' on my stationary bike for another 15 min. at

least 3x weekly. I just joined the YMCA and am starting aqua aerobics and lap

walking & swimming.

I am down from 5 BP meds daily to 1 - another month and I may be done. No more

acid reflux (water reflux not withstanding).

I am down 30+ pounds at my last weigh in. My knees and ankles are better - no

more edema -

I think the sleep apnea might be improving although I still wake up during the

night, but I am not as drowsy in the afternoon and generally have much more

energy.

I'm a happy camper - just lurking here at the MGB to keep up with the people

I've come to care about. :>)

WOW, sounds like you are doing fantastic!! I don't think I will have

problems with liquids, as I don't drink anything with meals (drives my

sister crazy!) but I was told a long time ago that drinking fluids during

mealtimes dilutes the stomach acids and can cause dyspepsia. So I usually

wait about 30 minutes after eating before drinking anything. Never thought

that habit would come in handy some day. LOL

It's great that you can eat pretty much anything. Doesn't sound like you've

had too much trouble with dumping either. That is so great, I am happy for

you. :-) We need you in here, you and Deloris have provided us with much

needed information. Thank you!!

When I eat - especially heavier type foods, once they hit the pouch, it takes 30

minutes or more to move thru my pouch. In the meanwhile, the food forms a sort

of plug that blocks the little outlet from the pouch until it has all passed

through. If I drink on top of this 'plug' there is nowhere for the water to go.

It sits in your esophagus and if you drink way too much, it will sit in the back

of your throat. I don't know if the MGB has the same effect, but it truly is an

adjustment for me, but so far the only really hard one.

The other problem is if you drink with (not after) eating, it will tend to wash

the food through more quickly and it is easier to eat more food than you should

and get less nutrition.

So I am really focusing on creating a new habit here.

But if that is the worst thing I have to deal with, I will stay a happy camper

(as long as the weight keeps coming off and STAYING off)
