Guest guest
Hi Toni, It is well worth to try the SCD goat yogurt, you will double your results with this diet! Wait for 1 month before trying it if your child does not have a severe allergy to it. If he reacts very strongly to dairy then wait longer. Start out with only 1/8 of a teaspoon. I will post more posts concerning the healing yogurt tonight. Mimi

Guest guest
Toni, Where you dairy free before SCD? Is your son doing better on SCD? Are the cheeses made with cow milk or goat milk? You might want to switch to goat dairy and see if you observe improvements. Guest guest
You can substitute coconut butter for dairy butter in a lot of recipes. recoverymaze recoverymaze@...> wrote:Hi Toni, It is well worth to try the SCD goat yogurt, you will double your results with this diet! Guest guest
Toni, I just wanted to let you know about WHY dairy-free can be important for ASD kids. It is very complicated, but here is the short version. Do you know about the GFCF diet? - that is gluten-free/casein-free (casein being the dairy protein). If you take a look at any gfcf sites, you will learn that the proteins in gluten and dairy can cause an opiate-like effect in the brains of some children (because the proteins are not digested properly). By removing these proteins from the diet, the children get better eye contact and speech and other improvements. When you do SCD, you are eliminating gluten (so you will be gluten-free), so that is a good thing. I would suggest eliminating dairy to see if you notice any good (or bad) reactions. Then, you could add the goat yogurt very slowly (1/8 t./day to start). When you remove dairy - 2 things to watch out for: 1.Your child could have a withdrawal from removing the opiate effect that the dairy was giving them - you might want to gradually eliminate it. - also if your child craves dairy that is sign that it is giving him the opiates. 2. Removing dairy could cause some constipation - cooked fruits and vegetables will help the constipation. I would recommend SCD over just the GFCF diet since SCD addresses HEALING of the intestinal problems and GFCF does not. Also, you can use ghee instead of butter to keep it dairy-free and not take away a flavor your son is used to. Guest guest
Toni, I am so glad that you are seeing improvements! I love it when parents tell us the good news...Be patient,it takes time for the gut to heal completely. I am used to counseling parents who were GFCF prior to SCD. For those parents,I advise to wait before introducing the SCD yogurt. I am not sure what advice to give parents who gave dairy before SCD. Here are some options: *Try to switch to goat dairy and avoid the products made from cow milk. *Avoid all dairy for a period of time. * Make no changes and continue with the great results that you are getting! Please let me know about your updated report. I learn so much from parents. Eating fish > is not required to do SCD. I think this is all because I do not like Dr. Mercola used as a point of reference or authority. It is not about fish consumption. Fish is one of the allowable sources of animal protein on SCD. Preferences about mercury cautions are absolutely valid and fish choices are up to the individual. Example: Some are allergic to shellfish. They would eliminate them and still be SCD. I have Latex Allergy and chemical sensitivities and have to eliminate some SCD legals to accomodate this but I remain totally within SCD otherwise.( the exception would be that since I have been SCD for six years I might want to take something back that is not on the diet. As it happens, I do not.) BTW and a little OT about alternative practitioners. I used to be a big fan of Dr. Weil ( also a licensed MD and harvard graduate) before he became so popular and before I became ill. He had an eight week program. Part of it was buying fresh flowers for the home every week. Nice, but no help for celiac disease unless we decide a little relaxation contributes to healing. Carol F. Guest guest
We rarely eat fish (maybe a few times per year). I live in middle America, far away from any decent access to freshly caught ocean fish (if those are even safe at this point). No one needs to eat fish if they choose not to. Guest guest
I agree. I follow SCD strictly, but I am skeptical of fish as well for both of my boys. It just isn't worth any possible risk. I know many other parents who feel the same way. I appreciate everyone's point of view and information sharing to allow us to make our own informed decisions. mom to 3 years old ASD and SCD 8 1/2 months Re: clarification > We rarely eat fish (maybe a few times per year).
