When I first called BCBS here in Maine and told them I was planning on having surgery in NC, they told me I needed to speak with the people at the NC office. The phone number there is 1-800-672- 7897. They also gave me the fax number which you need for the on line patient form that you send in to Dr. Rutledge. That phone # is 1-919- 765-1934. They said they couldn't do anything further until they received the request for surgery from Dr. R's office. I mailed my packet overnight express to arrive on Fri. March 17th, Debbie faxed the request for surgery letter to them on the 18th & I was approved on the 22nd!! I know this because I called BCBS the 23rd to see if they had received the letter & if there was a decision made on it. They informed then that I was approved & they were sending me a letter to make it official. I would call your local branch of BCBS first to make sure the process is the same.
