I had someone tell me about > it and they are using it on a different diet (Body Ecology Diet) for > yeast management. > We don't use kefir on SCD although we have some fermented foods that are beneficial. The BED also advocates things like green coconut water which are contra-indicated for our diet and can be really hard on the digestive system. A few people who left SCD and tried combined deitary interventions including BED had some very unpleasant consequences including hospitalization. Searching Mom can explain more about kefir as I belive it can be used when healing has taken place and it has some similarities to yogurt. Carol F. Guest guest
Dear and Listmates, Many years ago,I fed kefir to my oldest son who was then a baby. I also had given him goat yogurt. My experience with these products made me a fermented dairy enthusiast. When our SCD/ASD movement began,I strongly advocated for goat yogurt and kefir despite the fact that dairy was taboo for children with autism at that time. I wrote a bit about kefir but I started the advocacy for the yogurt first because that had milder die off reaction. We did not want to make a scandal with strong initial reactions.... I had very passionate belief in the power of kefir for our ASD children but Elaine and Carol wanted the kefir to be only used after the child had more healing. I had very intense debates with them....Then the " BED for Autism " movement appeared...At first, everyone raved about the BED kefir but later it became apparent that many ASD children had very powerful initial bad reactions to the BED kefir and these reactions lasted a long time. I our early days, some SCD parents had tried the kefir (SCD style) but had no bad reactions. Did those powerful initial bad reactions to the BED kefir happen because of the BED starters or because those kids were not on SCD? Could it have been because the coconuts were not ripe? I just do not know... Our SCD goat yogurt is so much safer for ASD children. It brings miraculous results for both the digestive and neurological symptoms of autism. SCD links to Kefir: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.com/faq/kefir.html http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/kefir.htm Here is an old post on our list where I praised kefir: May 24, 2003 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/43 I will send links to kefir posts from our first list to those who request it in private email. Our oldest list is not very active anymore (the children's SCD movement changed lists four times). All the best,Mimi >
Guest guest
Jenn, Kefir contains these organisms:Lactobacilli, Streptococci-Lactococci, Acetobacter and Yeasts. I have never heard that kefir contains bifidum. Where did you read that? Elaine was concerned that the yeast in kefir might cross react with the yeast of an immune compromised person. Elaine believed that kefir was a great food for folks who were healthy. Some ASD-SCD kids did fantastic with goat kefir. However, since many of our kids have initial reactions to the goat yogurt, might it not be smarter to start out with the yogurt? After the initial bad reaction,a lot of quick healing takes place after the yogurt has been introduced. Maybe the yogurt will accelerate the time that one is ready to be considered well and ready for the kefir. Mimi > > I noticed kefir has a lot of different kinds of bacteria. Guest guest
Hi Jenn, I am so glad to hear that you are giving your child nut yogurt;fermented foods are so important for gut health!! If you want to get even better results then you should give your child the goat yogurt. I will explain why in a seperate post. Guest guest
Hi Jenn and Listmates, Yes,the milk protects the good bugs on their way down the GI tract. The probiotics have to survive the harsh conditions in the stomach. More of them are saved to do their job in the colon. Sometimes,a negative reaction to the goat yogurt indicates a die off reaction. You have to start out with 1/8 of a teaspoon. It is very important to have cultured foods. Use saurkraut and nut yogurt if your child cannot tolerate goat yogurt.
