I started the SCD about year ago because of colitis, IBS and many

other symptoms listed on the scd website. After being on the scd for

2 months I lost 5 lbs then my weight stablized. I still believe

that the elimination of the starches and sugars has helped my

digestive tract but I don't believe all the fats, meats, fish and

dairy products are healthy. I became a vegan still following the

the scd rules and lost an additional 15 lbs in 6 weeks. I feel

better as a vegan. I don't know if it is good for everybody but it

is working for me and I've been on it for almost a year.

3-6 times per day ( I just thought this was normal for everyone

until I learned about SCD.) I did have a colonoscopy (which was

normal) due to a high family history of colon cancer (in all my

As a vegan do you avoid eggs too? What do you eat? Take care, Fay

Yes, I avoid eggs. I follow Dr. Fuhrman's " Eat to Live " (excellant

book)diet and he says you don't have to eat grains and starches and

sugar so it can be SCD safe. I know elaine recommends if you are

Vegan at least have 1 egg a day but I don't. Furman says egg whites

are O.K. on occasion.

If you have weight issues, SCD usually stabilizes weight once you attain an

appropriate weight for your body build.

It happens I lost 86 pounds just before starting SCD and was obsessed with

combining

weight loss and maintainenace issues in my posts to SCD lists and was asked to

desist.

I have maintained the loss for five years while on SCD and the weigh fluctuates

only within

two pounds either way.

If you feel you have to lose weight, maintain good nutrition and modify your

daily calorie

intake. But please, please do not describe SCD as a weight loss tool. There is a

group who

do a low carb version of SCD but that is discouraged on 99% of SCD support

lists.

Our whole family went SCD for my ASD daughter because we didn't feel

right eating illegal foods in front of her. I lost weight. My

husband, who has significant trouble losing weight, started melting

away pounds. The kids did not lose weight, but didn't gain much

weight. They didn't seem to grow as much over time. She did prefer

protein sources over carbs though and getting more SCD carbs into

her that appeals to her is very challenging so not getting enough

SCD carbs into her may or may not have had something to do with it.

But, I definitely got slim unintentionally!

I started SCD because I have a leaky gut, and a low thyroid & adrenals. I've

also gained a ton of weight in the last couple years. I also have a yeast

overgrowth. It makes sense to me that I was gaining weight because of poor

digestion and the low thyroid. I've only been on SCD 4 weeks, and have

already noticed a weight loss. Because my DAN doctor is concerned about SCD

using honey, because honey is high in clostridia, I've been doing SCD

without honey.

I've noticed some yeast die-off, and in the past, I've had a terrible

" Herxheimer " reaction from yeast die-off. However, folks on this list have

told me that using digestive enzymes with proteases eliminated the

uncomfortable die-off reactions, since the proteases " mop-up " the yeast

die-off by-products. I'm still having yeast die-off, but have not

experienced any discomfort because I'm taking the digestive enzymes with

proteases.

I would suggest that you go ahead and implement SCD all the way, but be easy

on yourself, by including honey. Being able to have sweets with honey will

hopefully take the edge off any feelings of denial from not being able to

have sugar.

I've also noticed that my thinking is clearer, and I have so much more

energy, now that I'm on SCD. I feel the best I've ever felt.

Hope some of the above is helpful,

Marilyn

Thank you everyone for you helpful responces. I know the SCD is not

for weight loss and I would not promot it in that way. I know that

it would be best for me for my gut and yeast issues and was wondering

if weight loss would be a welcome " side effect. "

Thanks again now I just need to get started!

Hi Carol,

I am glad that parents are bringing up the topic of weight loss and

SCD.

I agree with you that we should not call SCD a weight loss diet but

a weight normalyzing diet;it helps folks regain the weight that is

right for them. However, knowing about this benefit might encourage

parents to do the diet with their child. There are many advantages

to having parents implement this diet.

* Child will have less tempting illegal food in the house to sneak.

* Parent will be able to understand the effects of the diet

better, this is important because many of our kids are not verbal.

When we started SCD,my husband and I immediately felt so much better

but my son had a terrible initial reaction. Our good experience with

SCD gave us the courage to continue SCD with our son. Fortunately,my

son overcame his initial difficulties and is doing great with SCD!

My daughter is the diet rebel and has an amazing ability to find

illegal foods. We would never had been able to do SCD with her had

we not done the diet along with her.

The list that forbids this topic is for adults with IBD,their issues

are different than our issues. I broke away from that list and

started this list because I wanted to discuss issues that were

relevant to our kids.

I want to hear more about SCD and weight loss...if it helps save our

kids than it is a great topic! We might even put up a file for

parents about this topic.

Hi ,

> Has anyone else used SCD for this purpose? Or got this result after

starting?

My husband joined me on the diet 3 mos after I started it. He did it

to be supportive and so I wouldn't have to make different meals. Much

to his delight he lost weight. He had been struggling to lose

weight - skipped breakfast, ate low fat, ate light meals but none of

it seemed to make a difference. When he started SCD I *made* him eat

three meals /day. (It wasn't much of a struggle though because he'd

start the day with a yogurt smoothie which he loved.) Despite eating

three hearty meals and snacks, he lost 12 pounds the first week. 7

pounds the second week and then the weight loss slowed down.

Eventually he lost 40 lbs altogether. This was eating full fat yogurt

and plenty of SCD sweets. At the same time I put on the 40 lbs that I

needed to ( I was very underweight before SCD) eating vitually the

same things (although I ate more ). When he reached his target weight

for his Height and build the weight loss stopped - same with me when I

reached the appropriate weight my weight gain stopped. many others on

other lists report the same thing - that SCD normalizes weight. This

is probably why many whose children are underweight have huge

appetites on SCD and go through growth spurts ( but that's a seperate

topic )

> My son has been SCD since 2/05 for intestinal yeast and severe D 8-

10 per day. I eat many of the things he does but have not made the

commitment to go 100%.

My husband was almost SCD but it wasn't until he was 100% that the

weight loss began. If you go 100% and run into problems with light

headedness etc perhaps you can substitute with honey or SCD legal

juices, fruits etc. Some of what you are experiencing may be die off -

which epsom salt baths and/or activated charcoal may help with .

How is Caden doing with the diet?

Sheila,

Thank you so much for your post. It was very inspiring to say the

least. So far I have gotten away with eating non-SCD foods when

Caden was not around. And if he did see me and asked for some, I

told him that " It is yucky for your tummy. " It is becoming harder

and harder to keep him out of the " yucky stuff " and I feel bad for

him when I am sitting there eating a bowl of cherrios and he can not

have any.

He has been doing very well on SCD. Some of my family (probly more

than I know) thought I was nuts for starting him on the diet. We

started him because of severe diaper rash from yeast. If his BM

touched him for more than a few minutes, he was blistered and

bleeding. I believe that my son has overgrowth from the 13

antibiotics that he was on for ear infections (2 were in the NICU for

pnemonia). One of the last culture we took from the fluid out of his

ear did not grow any bacteria but grew YEAST!!!! The ear infections

stopped when we eliminated all dairy from his diet. Within 2 weeks

his ear infections were gone and has been ever since.

When I voiced my concern to my pediatrician about the diaper rash, 8-

10 dbm's per day and his delayed speech, she told me that the yeast

diaper rash would go away as soon as he was potty trained!!! That

some kids had more bm's/day than others and that he was not talking

mush because of all the ear infections that he had during which time

he failed his hearing tests. Well I knew there was more to it than

that.

Then one of my parents (I'm a ped physical therapist) told me about

SCD.

He is now catching up in his speech, having 1-2 regular bm's per day,

no more diaper rash (still woking on the pooping in the toilet thing)

I really feel blessed that this mother and all of you came into my

life. I believe SCD saved my son and will help him be healthier in

his life.

I also feel that I learned of this diet to help other kids I work

with. I have introduced SCD to the parents of some of the children

with ASD or gut issues that I work with at my clinic.

(Sorry for rambling on)

Thanks again Sheila!!
