ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

I am quite aware I could get my selenium from Brazil nuts. Many

years of sugar abuse ruined my teeth. I used to eat brazil nuts daily. I

no longer do a morning fruit smoothie because I needed to cut back on my

fruit intake, and the nuts are impossible for me to eat without grinding

them first. Tablets are convenient.

I consult the USDA database on foods probably twice a week. But I

am still a big fan of supplements. And I still feel that EFAs are indeed

essential.

food), you will get over 500% of the RDA!

Unfortunately, that is true only if the nuts are grown in selenium-

rich soil such as is found in Brazil. Brazil nuts grown in central

America do not contain selenium. The upshot is that you have to know

where they are grown or you could be doing your body a disservice

with all good intent.

I don't eat fish, I basically don't like eating animal products. I take 2

fish-oil capsules per day. Is this a mistake?

--------------------------------------

Nina - you would be better off going " right to the source " for your

essential fatty acids. I've been eating aphanizominon flos aquae for about

8 years now. It's a certain kind of blue green algae. After all - where do

you think fish get their essential fatty acids? From the algae they eat!

So I just skip the middle man (or I guess I should say the middle fish), and

just eat what the fish eat.

On the other hand this well-referenced article shows that fish

convert omega-6 oil in their diet to omega-3 oil.

One referenced statement says, " It is known that an increase in ?6

fatty acids causes an increase in ?3 fatty acids (10). "

Is milk a whole food? It is derived from a cow; the cow can be seen

as the whole food and the milk, merely a component ;)

Just playin' wit' yer head.

But the algae already has the perfect ratio of 3's to 6's, so I'll just

stick with my algae.

Bonnie,

I think I read in Coconut Cures that there is a small amount of EFAs

in VCO....like 2.5%.
