However, recent clinical and histopathologic evidence suggests that uneventful resolution is not always the case, and several potential problems may arise from retained capsules after removal of the implant. Retained implant capsules may result in a spiculated mass suspicious for carcinoma, dense calcifications that obscure neighboring breast tissue on subsequent imaging studies, and cystic masses due to persistent serous effusion, expansile hematoma, or encapsulated silicone filled cysts. Furthermore, retained capsules are a reservoir of implant-related foreign material in the case of silicone gel-filled implants and textured implants promoting tissue ingrowth. To avoid complications from retained capsules, total capsulectomy or postoperative surveillance should be offered to patients.PMID: 7824616 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]Complications related to retained breast implant c...[Plast Reconstr Surg. 1995] - PubMed Result 1: Plast Reconstr Surg. 1998 Apr;101(4):1085-8. It has been proposed that capsulectomy after breast implant removal was unnecessary, as the body resorbs the capsule when the implant, the impetus for the foreign body response, is removed. We report eight women with persistent capsules 10 months to 17 years after silicone breast implant removal.PMID: 9514346 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]Breast capsule persistence after breast implant re...[Plast Reconstr Surg. 1998] - PubMed Result1: Br J Plast Surg. 1979 Jan;32(1):35-42.LinksForeign material in the capsules around breast prostheses and the cellular reaction to it.Smahel J.Thirteen capsules which had formed around breast prostheses were examined, using the technique of splitting the capsule wall. A foreign material in droplet form was present in all the capsules. The foreign material was taken up by phagocytes, and the cytological evidence is that it has cytotoxic activity. It was shown that the material migrates to the vessels in the outer layer of the capsule and may reach the lumen of those vessels. On the basis of the microscopic appearance and the results of infrared spectrum analysis, the foreign material in the capsules was assumed to be silicone.PMID: 371727 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]Foreign material in the capsules around breast pro...[br J Plast Surg. 1979] - PubMed Result **************Recession-proof vacation ideas.
