Hi ,

>Hi, I was wondering if chestnuts are SCD legal... I came

across " chestnut flour " in the health food store, and would love to

experiment and bake with it, as we love the taste of it.

From the BTVC website under " Chestnuts " :

" Elaine writes:

When you have progressed quite a bit on the diet and are on your way

towards recovery, you can try them. Chestnut flour is not legal.

However, if you buy dried chestnuts, soak them and cook them until soft.

You can then use them for stuffing and other things. Rabbi Rosenbaum in

Jerusalem who published my book in Hebrew was so particular that he had a

full 3-4 pages of analysis on cooked, raw, roasted, etc. chestnuts. It is

just common sense to realize that once you boil something which has some

starch in it, it will become so water-soaked that the weight will be

mostly water and the tiny bit of starch is diluted way down. "

May be tried when symptom free. However, if you buy dried chestnuts, soak them

and

cook them until soft.

Note if you want to know if something is legal, you can often find the answer

The ready made chestnut flour is not legal because it isn't soaked

and cooked til soft. Soaking removes some starch and making a puree

instead of flour with them makes them easier to digest because the

water in them dilutes any starch that may be left after soaking. If

you dry them out after you will be getting a higher concentration of

leftover starch.

Either way chestnut puree (made as described above) is for those

doing extremely well on the diet - it is an advanced food.
