Guest guest
Background: Vita4life.net has a protein supplement they sell that is made with honey and didn't sound bad. But it says in " ingredients, " that it is made of " pre-digested collagen. " I was concerned about this for two reasons: (1) " Pre-digested " to me means either it was " digested " by organisms (i.e., fermentation/rot) or it was eaten by something else (animal) first, and therefore if it is " predigested, " it is, well, poop. (2) The source of the collagen is not identified and a few years back, it was publicized that cosmetic companies were getting collagen from fetal tissue and placentas. [i also know for a fact that most dry dogfoods--read the labels-- contain " chicken digest, " or " cow digest, " which is business doublespeak for poop, too, so don't think I'm being too imaginative here. And let's don't forget the horse-pee estrogen pills, either.]. So, call me warped, but these two terms together, " predigested collagen, " with nothing more, conjured up a grim image for me, so I wrote the company and asked them: " (1) what source is the collagen (identify specifically what it comes from. I have heard of collagen being obtained from placentas -- is that the source? If not, what is the source?); " " (2) How is it 'predigested?' The only way I can think of that something could be " predigested " would be if it is in fact excrement. Please explain. " The president wrote me back and said he didn't know but he'd find out (I posted his message day before yesterday). Now, yesterday, I got this response. Read it carefully because it *seems* to answer the questions, but it is a lot of spin and gloss. Nowhere does he ever say *what* the protein (collagen) is from, or how it is pre-digested (the fact that it is " done in a lab " and uses heat implies that it is probably a fermentation process, but he doesn't actually say). He just restates that it is a protein and is predigested. Subject: Vita4Life! Protein Response Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 15:55:30 -0700 To: lindat@...> CC: " Lantaff " kev@...> Hi - Goodness, do you ever present a morbid picture. Just kidding - Here is how it works: Essentially all of these steps are done artificially in the lab. The protein formula contains a predigested collagen Hydrosylate. Protein Hydrosylate is a solution which contains the amino acids derived from an artificially digested protein. It is through this process that the peptide chain is dissolved which allows for the body to begin the absorbtion process a step faster then usual. This also we believe based on our testing that many people who use our protein may ned to begin taking less with the positive lab results. Secondly, molecular weight is important for many reason to us, but for the Bariatric Patient it means that what you are digesting is a balance of essential and non-essential amino acids. Because our protein is digested artificiallly under very controlled conditions it is free of fat, carbohydrates and cholesterol unlike whey or soy based proteins and using a predigested collagen is an excellent choice for people who have allergic reactions with milk and soy products. Finally, we wanted to offer a product that offered a natural flavoring of which 5.5% of the sugar is natural honey and the remaining .5% is the artifically flavored and citric for fragrance along with the preservatives to protect the product. The artificial items are well below what the EPA recommends on a daily basis. Add to that the individual packets for portability and we believe we have one heck of a product for all to enjoy. Hope this helps - Greg Race ============================================================== So I wrote them again, saying, " Thank you. So where does the collagen come from? " I'll update this again if they ever give me an answer. Kind regards, webpage: http://www.fourlane.com/lindat ************* L.A.
