Has anyone written a simple explaination of the scd diet, why it is so

important to our kids health/beviours that I could give to my sons

school- he is attending a different school this year 4th-6th grade and the

staff is new and unfamilar with the diet and would like to understand the

diet and how it helps. I don't know where to start and don't want to

overwhelm them but do want them to know how important it is for Nate to

follow it at all times?thanks sue

Gertrude did a very good summary a day or two ago.

Here is an excerpt from a letter I use when contacting organizations and

media:

The fifty year old diet used by adults to combat gastric illness is having a

remarkable

effect on a group of autistic children who are following it. The Specific

Carbohydrate Diet

restricts but does not eliminate or limit carbohydrates . It is not a low

carbohyrdate diet

and is not related to weight control. The diet excludes a category of

carbohydrates not

easily digested. There is a strong brain-gut connection and it appears

decreasing bacterial

overgrowth is restoring cognitive abilities in many of the children following

the special

version for autism and ADHD and ADD.

The autistic community of parents and doctors has long endorsed other approaches

but in

light of increasing success reported with SCD, more are turning attention to it.

Parents and

teachers of autistic children report a change in attitude, increases in skills

and

responsiveness, and in some cases after only a few weeks on the diet.

Elaine Gottschall , author of the book " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " was a

scientist who

pursued her study of the effect of food on the functioning of the digestive

tract and its

effects on behavior for forty five years and has lectured at major autism

conferences.

many DAN (Deafeat Autism Now) practitioners are showing increasing interest in

the diet.
