Well, I just passed a small hurdle today. I took my daughter in to see our

family doc, and I told him that I have an appointment with him on Monday, and

that among other things I wanted to discuss this surgery (the MGB) that I am

going to have. I gave him a copy of Dr. R's letter for your doctor from the web

site (I personalized it by putting my own name in as the patient, like I heard

someone else say they had done), and I gave him a copy of the manual, too.

While I was sitting there telling him about the surgery and all the research I

have done, and the reasons why I have chosen the MGB, he was going through the

manual. When I was done explaining (which really only took a few minutes) he

said, " Well, I've read just about all of this now (the manual), and I think it's

the best option. " He is apparently a speed reader, and can do several things at

once because I know he was also listening to me because he asked very pertinent

questions about what I was saying. He said that it has been shown that the only

really effective treatment for serious obesity is surgery, and that he had

referred 3 of his other patients to Vanderbilt for open RNY. He asked why I

preferred the MGB to the RNY, and he listened carefully to my reasons, and

agreed with me!

So I will see him Monday and find out if I have any other co-morbidities that

haven't been confirmed, and I will see if he still agrees that the MGB is the

best thing for me. I think he will check out Dr. R's web site because I have

told him before about other research I have done on the web about other things,

and he has always checked it out, too. He said that he was very impressed that

Dr. R " lays it all out there " by giving all the information and statistics and

having us contact post-ops.

I had been so scared to even bring this up to this doc (although my husband had

wisely told me that the doc would at least listen to me respectfully because

that is what he has always done in the past). I am so relieved, and I am

looking forward to my appointment on Monday. If all goes well then, and he says

he will write the letter to Dr. R for sure, then I will give you his name so he

can go on the great and supportive doctors list!

Sorry this is so long. I just had to tell about this happy experience!

Congratulations to all who have just had or are about to have the surgery!
