Guest guest
Mimi, If I may ask for some advice on my 4 year old ASD son: He has been on the SCD for 1.4 years and has had incredible success with it. After 11 months on the diet, he no longer had yeast OR bacteria problems. More focused, calmer, happier. My question is this; since he has been on the diet for a while, has no negative reaction to homemade goat yogurt and has no major gut issues that I can see, would it be ok to introduce kefir? Would kefir help to maintain a healthy gut as well as heal? I have very little knowledge about kefir-just started googling it recently bc of some posts. But it sounds like it's helping a lot of people. You don't have to get into detail since I know this is an SCD group, but just advice on whether you think a child like my son would be ok using kefir would be appreciated. Thanks --- recoverymaze recoverymaze@...> wrote: > > > Dear and Listmates, > > Many years ago,I fed kefir to my oldest son who was > then a baby. I > also had given him goat yogurt. Guest guest
Hi , I encouraged the use of kefir when I moderated the first SCD list for children with autism and other conditions. The children who had tried kefir had no problems but it was a very small number of kids. I had intended to run an experiment for kefir and ASD. Unfortunately,I had no time to do it. When SCD became better known in the ASD community, I got too busy defending SCD.... Right now,I am upset by the bad outcomes with the BED type kefir. It is possible that those outcomes would not happen with SCD but I have no time for trying this. The SCD goat yogurt is the best for beginners;it has a good safety record for our children with ASD. When negative reactions have occurred, they did not last longer than 3 weeks; they usually went away within days. I think that your child is ready for trying kefir. Try small quantities at first. Ferment longer than you need to do (2 days) to make sure all the lactose is gone. I strain the kefir ?granules? twice in a nylon strainer to make sure that they remain separate from the kefir liquid. You can get cheap nylon strainers in Chinese markets. I hunted for them for months until I discovered them during a trip to Chinatown. You can also find nylon strainers online by making a Google search for nylon strainers. Here is more info concerning kefir: http://www.healingcrow.com/ferfun/ferfun.html Here is a good place to buy the BED grains http://www.gemcultures.com/ To get it for free: http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html#obtaining-kefir-grains Dom is the authority on kefir and he wrote this website about kefir: http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html#real-kefir To read Dom's opinion concerning the BED and other imitation kefir starters, you have to click on: Who put REAL with KEFIR? Guest guest
The Body Ecology Diet book recommends kefir from Helios. I don't have any in front of me to read the ingredients, but if we're ready to try kefir, would Helios be legal? I stopped using Helios kefir when I started SCD, because I thought it wasn't legal. Before, whenever I had the signs of a vaginal yeast infection (itching), I would use Helios kefir, and it always got rid of the symptoms of yeast infection very quickly. Just my experience, Marilyn leaky gut, low thyroid/adrenal, SCD 5 weeks Re: Kefir-Mimi > Hi , > > I encouraged the use of kefir when I moderated the first SCD list > for children with autism and other conditions. Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, Commercially made yogurt and kefir are not legal because they contain too much lactose...great food for the destructive gut bugs! Fermented dairy products need to be homemade in order to insure that all the lactose is gone. Mimi > > The Body Ecology Diet book recommends kefir from Helios. Guest guest
Thanks Mimi. My " gut " tells me my son will not have a bad reaction to the kefir. But, I will read up on it some more and once I feel comfortable, will try it. I'm sure I will have more questions for you. Thanks for all the resources! --- recoverymaze recoverymaze@...> wrote: > Hi , > > I encouraged the use of kefir when I moderated the > first SCD list > for children with autism and other conditions.
