Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad you found us, too! You've got some issues going on that need attention, that is certain! I'll try to answer some of your questions. First, I'm glad to hear you've only had 2 mammograms since 40....mammograms can do damage to the implants, like causing them to rupture. Have you told the clinician that you have implants when doing the mammogram? Dede has shared her photos with us of what happened to her after a mammogram. You can see them in the photos section, and they clearly ruptured. So be careful! Yes, I believe it is true that the only way to tell for sure if your implants are leaking (without opening you up) is to to an MRI with a breast coil. Those health issues that you are describing are pretty classic for women with implants. Just be careful about that mammogram, and BE SURE to tell the person who does it that you have implants and that you suspect that they may be leaking after all these years. We do have studies that have shown most older implants are leaking by the time they are 20 years old, and many women have fibromyalgia symptoms that go with those leaking implants, without realizing the cause. How long have you been having these symptoms? It will be imperative that you have your implants removed carefully and correctly. You do not want to go to just anyone and ask them for explant. You will want to use a doctor who is very skilled and very knowledgeable about the proper way to remove them, especially if there is a risk of rupture present. We are very lucky in this country that we have astute doctors who have sided with us in knowing that implants have caused illness and that they pose further risks if not removed correctly. Not all doctors believe this...and that is why it is important to choose your explanting surgeon carefully!!! We surely wish that all plastic surgeons knew how to remove implants properly, but we've seen and heard of a number of cases where doctors actually have lied to their patients about what they did at explant. (Such as telling the woman that she was getting a total capsulectomy, only to only perform a partial capsulectomy, or that she was getting saline implants, only to find out upon explant that the doctor has actually put in silicone gel implants!) Where are you located? We have a list of recommended surgeons (that we are always willing to add more names to, when we find good doctors), and you may want to look at that list first before you make your first call. Insurance may very well cover your explant if you have the correct letter written to explain the necessity of removal. Rupture is definitely one of those covered by most companies. Your doctor should be able to walk you through this process with your insurance. Dr. Kolb in Atlanta, GA is very good at getting explants covered, besides being a very skilled surgeon. Dr. LU Feng in Cleveland OH is also one of the top doctors in the country for properly removing implants of all kinds, including ruptured ones that are a mess. She can clean you up very well. We have a file in our files section and links section that covers all you need to know about explant. Be sure to look for those files and read them. There is a list of questions you should ask your doctor, as well as all the prep info you need to get ready for this important surgery. I hope this helps get you started on this journey. A better life can be ahead if you take the steps toward it! Hugs, Patty > > Hi, I am new here, so here is my story. I'm 47 I had silicone implants put in @ 1989. Now that they are over 20 years old I am getting very worried. I knew this day would come. I have only had 2 mammograms since the age of 40 the first one in 2004 it came back fine, they also told me that it would show if they were leaking and they told me they were not. (I have since read that the only way to tell for sure if they are leaking is with a MRI, I have no idea what to believe???) All is good.....except for the fact that I have been having a lot of health issues that can't be explained. Joint pain, xrays show no arthritis, fatigue, sleep disorders, hair loss, etc. I just read about all the health symptoms of silicone in the body and it has me really worried. I just had a second mammogram done last week, I figured I was past due since it had been almost 5 years snice my last one. I get the dreaded call that they found nodules and want me to come back for a diagnostic mammogram with ultra sound, ok.... I am dealing with that but I read that mammograms can cause the implants to rupture as well so that scares me especially since they are so old. I am going in today for these tests and hopefuly I will find out more. I have no idea what to do next. I want to know if they are leaking and I really want them out since they are so old even if they are not leaking yet. Do I just start calling Doctors asking if they do Explants? Do most insurance companies cover this? I ahve so many questions. I am so glad I found this site! Thank you so much! > >

Guest guest
Hi..............I don't know whether I can help you but I welcome you. My name is , and I am 51 years old. I have had saline implants for 9 years. I live in Canada. Recently I have learned that a mammogram has to be done a certain way to be safe for women who have implants. A mammogram done with compression can rupture the implant, and the capsule. The capsule is the scar tissue that forms around the implant to block it off from the rest of the body. I was advised to have a mammogram without compression done Eklund method. I was told that an ultrasound cannot detect a leak, but I am not sure whether a MRI can. Your nodules could be silicone. I have read that alot of woman with silicone implants, develop silicone nodules in the breast when the silicone leaks out. You have had your implants a long time. I believe they are good for 20 to 25 years according to the manufacturer, but that really doesn't mean anything. I would advise you to have them out. Some of the ladies on this site will be able to help you locate a doctor in your state who removes implants correctly. They have to be removed intact, and with the capsule, en bloc method. Please continue to communicate on this site. Your symptoms are probably a result of the implants, but some could be menopause related if you have not experienced that yet. I will be praying for you.
