Hi ,

I hope that I am not misunderstanding your comments about the mothers

of children with autism. Please do not underestimate these mothers or

fathers.

The parents of Autism are an amazing group. Unlike other medical

conditions where the doctors and pharmaceuticals are in charge of

finding cures, the treatment of autism is a parent led movement. There

have been many fathers and mothers who have done a lot of work for the

movement but I will limit this post to the SCD movement because that

is the area where I have the most knowledge since I was present at the

beginning of the SCD/ASD movement.

The movement was started by mothers who had found SCD without any help

from any doctors. Only one doctor,Dr G, was aware of SCD and he had

found out about the diet from the mothers of his patients.

The early mothers worked very hard without any help from anyone in

the ASD establishment. The first DAN practitioner who came to our

rescue was the mother of an autistic son. Pam Ferro RN who runs

an ASD clinic was the angel who made a huge difference.

Pam organized the first DAN conference in Cape Cod. Elaine was the first

featured speaker and Binstock gave a talk explaining why the

science of SCD was valid. The only doctor in attendance was the doctor

that worked in Pam's clinic. There were no other doctors (male or

female)in attendance, despite the fact that invitations were sent out on

the internet. Pam continued to work very hard to convince the other

doctors and we were amazed that some doctors did listen.

I do agree with you that fathers should help make treatment plans. Many

mothers are too sleep deprived to make good decisions. I have certainly

witnessed many moms make unwise decisions but this phenomena is not

limited to the mothers of autism. Look at all the men and women who

choose to do bypass surgery or liposuction instead of exercise for

weight loss. We could cite endless examples of stupid patient decisions

that are not limited to the mothers of ASD children.

PS I just asked my husband to listen to the DAN lectures about SCD so he

can help me discipline my daughter who is the SCD rebel. He might help

me make better decisions. Two heads are better than one.

PS2 I hope we can move to other topics....
