Maxide is what I was taking when I got so sick. I won't ever touch that stuff

again. It worked great on the edema but.........

I will ask my doctor about Aldactone. I definitely need something - I'm not

sure I can go through another month like I had last month. I couldn't even

hardly get in the car!

Re: Edema

I used to take a diuretic that caused potassium loss so my doc switched me to

Aldactone and I'm doing great. Indapamide, also a diuretic caused me severe

joint pain for years and one day I read the drug profile and found out joint

pain was a side effect. I told my doctor and he switched me to Maxide and it

caused the potassium loss. You need to be so careful with these meds.

Hi ,

Yes, your information does help. I don't know why I never considered my weight

to be part of the edema problem. Maybe it's because I got so sick of doctors

blaming every thing else on weight. But now that I know there's a connection it

gives me even more reason to do something about it.

Gosh, you only have nine days to go to surgery. I'll be rooting for you.

Thanks!

Re: Edema

Hi Marsha!

I never had edema until I hit 230 (I'm 250 now, down from 265 and

*that* seems to have been from edema caused by a medication I was

taking).

Weight makes edema worse, that is for sure, and makes your joints

hurt. Weight also makes diabetes worse and diabetes causes edema.

Some medications cause edema (like the one I was on that made my legs

and ankles swell far worse than usual).

But without a doubt, the main problem that has caused me to have

swelling and joint pain has been my weight. Even 200 is very heavy

for me (I'm 5'4 and 47 years old), but I didn't have the constant

swelling and edema until I hit 230. At 250, it is nearly unbearable.

The bones in my lower legs have actually bent out from the stress.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Anne,

I just recently found out I have mild asthma too, which could probably be caused

by the same thing the edema is caused by.

It would be wonderful to not crave sweets. I can't even imagine what that would

be like.

Re: Edema

Dear Marsha, I am not a nurse or medially trained, so I can speak only from

my own experience. I has severe edema in my feet, ankles, legs and hands

before my surgery and had that problem for several years. All I know is that

right after surgery it started going away. I even had fluid in my lungs. I

think that it was linked to my hormones directly. I had a total hysterectomy

when I was 45 and am now 55 and that is when all my problems started to

magnify big time. I was a mess. At surgery I weighed 242 lbs and I am small

boned and 5 ft 1 in tall/ now I am 172 lbs and feeling great. I can breathe

easy and am very active. I could talk all day about the difference that I

feel and enjoy now. All my senses are sharpened. I can smell things so much

better, everything is better. The thing that helps the most is that horrible

craving of sweets is gone, as is the craving for greasy foods. It is so

wonderful to be free and I think my body is happy too!!! Bye now.

Hi, everyone!

I really appreciate all the recent posts re: Edema. I, too, have struggled with

this for at least the last year; my feet, ankles, & lower legs are swollen all

the time, one more than the other (why, I don't know), & frequently, I have

severe pain in that ankle, too (I don't know if it's just joint pain or

arthritis or gout??). I have had high BP for 14 yr. at least and have taken

Maxzide (a diuretic) for most of that time. It helps my BP, but not the edema.

My PCP says there is nothing else I can take that would help the edema.

I'm sure the problem is because of my weight which has gone up 60 lb. in the

last year or so; I also have diabetes. I had a hysterectomy 2 1/2 yr. ago and

take Premarin every day, so I don't know if the edema is due to hormones,

diabetes, or just the weight, although I really think it is the weight. My

weight was not a problem to me until I turned 50 (2 1/2 yr.ago) and it's been

all downhill since then health-wise & uphill weight-wise.

I hope to have the MGB so I feel better and live longer pain-free & without the

edema. Every day when I get up & my feet hit the floor, I hope that soon I can

have the MGB. Until then, I will try the tea Shari mentioned in her post

earlier today. I hope it helps! I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again.
