My son is 13, and I'm on the list for his Crohn's, not autism. I probably won't be able to get back to her till sometime Sunday. Just a few things about growth: Steroids inhibit growth. This is a major reason why we decided to put my son on 6-MP (generic for Imuran) as it allowed him to wean off the prednisone (last day this Wed. G-d willing ;-). My GI, who's very mainstream, also recommends zinc. Zinc has a lot of beneficial properties, but the dr. specifically mentioned growth, and to help him through flu season. My son takes 2 Freeda vitamins - the super B complex, that has lots of great stuff, and the multivitamin. Freeda is highly endorsed by the SCD community as it's so pure. (The GI also recommends remicade preemptively and we have vociferously turned it down.) About making it through flu season: we also opted to give him the flu shot. This would not be a popular view here, for reasons I understand well, but adolescents with compromised immune systems might benefit from it. About gaining weight: He will gain weight, and not just due to steroids. Now the big question is, will he also grow vertically. Grammy Bauer on this list arranges for SCD buddies geographically. You may be able to find someone else with kids on the diet in your area. My son's not exactly a happy camper but we're plugging along. Got to run - he's coming home soon and I have no idea what I'm going to feed him. Take care, Fay
Guest guest
What color was the D? When you introduced the yogurt was a strict 1/8th of a tsp.? And then , you worked your way up? When I first introduced the nut yogurt, I started out really slow because I know how easy K reacts to everything. It is highly recommended. Also, did the D ever go away from starting the intro.? Were the fruits cooked first before you used them in the smoothies? Did you deseed the strawberries? You are starting out with cooked frutis and veggies right? My daughter has had die-off 3x's since the start of this diet. It was green mucousy D. If you do every stage slowly and add things very slowly paying close attention to allergies and die-off reactions, you will see a big difference keeping him on this diet. How much yogurt did you give at a time? Was it cow's milk or goat's milk used to make the yogurt? It is usually started 3-4 weks after the intro diet and in tiny amounts increasing them gradually. However, I do know a small amount is in the cheescake allowed on the intro diet. Carol F. Toronto, Celiac, SCD 5 years

One thing I forgot to mention: how to start the diet. In Breaking the Vicious Cycle there are guidelines for how to start the diet. By the time we started, my son had been on steroids for several weeks and was pretty much symptom free already. There was no way we could restrict quantity for a young teen on steroids. So we jumped in, letting him have just about everything that was legal besides cabbage, dried beans, and raw vegetables, which he has now and can tolerate well. You will have to juggle your son's hunger with what he can have that he can tolerate. You should get a lot of direction from this group but as I said, I can't help you much with easing into this, though please feel free to contact me directly. I'm sure there is more I can help with. BTW, it is very bizarre that the dr. says that there is no role for diet in the management of this disease. I'm sure he said this in the same breath as recommending that your son not have raw vegetables, corn chips, or popcorn, or a few other foods that many IBD people have to eat with caution, like fried foods, dairy, and red meat. And he probably said that these are lifelong precautions. OTOH, on the diet, we have had no trouble with fried foods, legal dairy and red meat, and raw produce. Logic dictates that diet should have SOME role. And BTVC offers some compelling logic. In any case, I have heard too much strong anecdotal evidence from IBD sufferers who have benefited from SCD to discount diet.
