Guest guest
You do meet an anesthesiologist in the pre-op holding area, you also meet a nurse anesthetist. The CRNA is actually the one choosing what you're going to be put to sleep with and stays with you throughout the case. The anesthesiologist is there for induction only. (That's a standard practice throughout the country) It's a 27 month program and they have a master's degree in nursing. If you have specific questions about what you'll be put to sleep with, ask the CRNA. Mine put me to sleep with Propofol, versed, fentanyl and succs for intubation. My hubby's in a CRNA program and has 18 months to go.I'm very familiar with their training and more than comfortable w/ a CRNA monitoring me. Yes,you are intubated(tube down into your lungs) most don't know it's happened, but you may have a sore throat the next day.(Not a big deal) Also in the o.r. there is usually a few or nurses, surgical tech,of course a surgeon, and possibly a resident. You don't need headphones...I scooted to a cool table, they covered me w/ a warm blanket(wonderful),put a b/p cuff and pulse ox(clip on my finger) The CRNA asked if I was ready,I smiled said yes.She put a mask near my face sadi take slow deep breaths,I could feel the medicine going through my i.v. and that was it. Iwoke up,just after they took the tube out...(you've heard it from there). It was a wonderful experience! No it would be very rare for a family member to be there. You are totally " out " and to be honest they would just distract the staff from doing their job. I wanted all their attention on me,not my hubby! Hope this helps w/ what to expect. Osler MGB 2/21/00 42 lbs.gone!
