Guest guest
Hi ladies! I've been reading over your posts and I'm soo happy I found a group of ladies that are here to support eachother!! I have soo many questions!!I did previously send a post regarding a good Las Vegas doctor to do my explant. However, I am 7 months pregnant barely making it day by day. It's very difficult as you all know. I know I'm going to have to wait a bit before I get explanted but was just trying to figure out some things I can do while I wait to help. For instance, I wanted to get tested to see if any chemicals can be found in my body. What sort of tests do I have done and who will do these tests? My regular physician is supportive of me getting my implants out but she just doesn't know how to test for the harmful effects of them. I would love to find a more knowedgable doctor but I'm in Las Vegas and haven't read about or heard about any doctor who knows about the effects of implants and I don't want to waist my time, money, and the little energy I have on finding one. NEED HELP!
Guest guest
I feel the same way...not sure what to do for my son. we have not been measured but we did see a nuerosurgeon who said he had mild to moderate plagio. He too feels that it will correct itself. I will keep on checking this post to see what other people say.Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: "LadyBugg" <lilmissdoolittle@...>Sender: Plagiocephaly Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2011 17:45:21 -0000<Plagiocephaly >Reply Plagiocephaly Subject: HELP! My son Garrett was diagnosed with plagiocephaly. He was a preemie, 2 months early, and spent 8 weeks in the NICU. He is now 7 months old and doing great otherwise! Here's my issue... we were sent to Physical Therapy first for his torticollis. He is doing better with his neck range of motion and all. He still has the flat spot on the back of his head, therefore affecting the right side of his head, making that ear and forehead more prominent. From PT, we were sent to an Orthopedist for evaluation for a band. They stated that based on the measurements, he is in the severe category, so he needs to have a band. However, I went to Shriner's with him yesterday for a 2nd opinion/treatment options for the torticollis. The doctor there is a spinal surgeon as well. His neck bones and all are great, it's the neck muscles. And, the doctor thinks that with continued PT/OT his ead will continue to do better without a band.So now I am CONFUSED!!!!!! All the what ifs? are floating through my head... do I band him or not? what if I don't and he has a funny shaped head forever? I need some advice from mommies who have been through this PLEASE!!!!!! =) Thank You!!!!! =)
Guest guest
Correcting the tort is very important (stretching and working on those muscles). But that won't fix all the problems with his head that have already occurred. I would say the only reason not to band is if his neck is so messed up that the band would actually worsen the tort - which is usually not the case. Banding will help correct the existing shape, and tort will help with the problem going forward. You need to work on both. Otherwise there is no way to compensate for all the asymmetric growth that has already occurred. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > My son Garrett was diagnosed with plagiocephaly. Guest guest
We went with the doc band and were VERY pleased with our son's progress. Two bands and six and a half months later, what a difference. He even went through PT to help with the muscles in his neck. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi,At 7 months your son's head is too rigid to significantly improve on its own. All the research supports this notion. Ask the spinal surgeon to send you studies supporting his opinion. Also, why is a spinal surgeon giving his opinion on plagio--usually a craniofacial specialist or less commonly a neurosurgeon deals with plagio. While your son's neck ROM will continue to improve with PT, it's too late to fix the head shape. If he were under 6 months and the tort was resolved, you could expect to see improvement. It's simply too late. Your second opinion is like our ped was--uninformed about banding. My daughter's ped began telling me when she was 8 weeks old that her head would round out on its own. I believed her until we were referred to PT for tort at 6 months and the PT brought up banding. Her head progressively worsened. It was too late by then for my daughter. We had to band at 8 months. Go for the band and move quick. 7 months is a good time to band but move on it NOW as every day that goes by is a lost opportunity for correction. The clock is ticking and baby's growth will dramatically slow by 12 months.Good luck!-Amy From: LadyBugg <lilmissdoolittle@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Wed, January 19, 2011 12:45:21 PMSubject: HELP! Guest guest
Right. I don't understand why some doctors don't use common sense and wonder how an ossified skull can reshape itself before making statements like "it will round itself out". With a much younger, more pliable skull where the plagiocephaly is still mild, repositioning can help the baby not have further damage. Some growth spurts could even the flattening out too at that point. But past the very early months, the laws of physics simply don't support the idea that a more solidified skull will pop back into shape on its own. Guest guest
Glad your little one is doing well. As a 1st time mom, I knew that I would always wonder "what if", so we decided to band because I would rather be safe than sorry. I knew banding wouldn't hurt, but by not banding my baby's head may not correct itself and may even get worse. Only you can make the decision of what is best for your baby and your family.
