Pat: The nutritionist here at Mt Sinai doesn't put diet soda on the 'no no

list', although regular soda IS to be avoided b/c of the sugar. I try to

drink the caffine free diet stuff b/c caffine can interfere with calcium

absorption.

I try not to drink it too much because I should be getting more water in

anyway and it can be pretty addictive! LOL

The carbonation can cause gas, especially immediately post-op. Some people

have suggested letting it 'fizz down' and then trying it. I also asked

Niccole whether the soda carbonation can 'stretch' your stomach - she said NO

.... it doesn't stretch the stomach but can cause uncomfortable gas and also

water is better for hydration, etc. and you'll be drinking less of that if

you are drinking more diet soda.

It could very well be that different surgeons have different criteria about

this, but I have had diet soda (try to keep it non caffinated, though).

Same with coffee -- decaf and with sugar substitute (I love splenda!).

Hi Pat-

I've never been told I couldn't drink soda. But I have heard that

RNY'er can't because their " pouch " is so tiny.

I have the occasional soda (dietRite with Splenda) and have no

problems.

I drink soda... I pour it over ice or give it a few shakes if its in a

bottle, to get the carbonation out... my surgeon told me there was no reason

I couldn't have soda, and that I couldn't hurt myself by doing so...

Surgeons differ, sometimes greatly, so if your surgeon says something

different, listen to them... not me.

Fondly,

Hi All,

I was just wondering why we can't drink soda? My Sister-in-law is

having the RNY and they told her she can drink diet soda. Is it a gas

issue?

Hi,

Day 2 in the hospital, I was drinking ginger ale & had no problem. I guess

everyone reacts different.

My dr. said no soda for 6 months, then only diet & up to 2 a day.

They said it has to do something with the new lining of the stomach &

allowing it enough to to heal & form. Just my dr's opinion. I've

read where it gives some people more gas than they would have

otherwise.

I have asked this question so many times and the answer is always the

same. You can never have carbonated drinks again. The psychologist I had to see

said that he knows personally of people who died from drinking sodas after

wls. My sister is horrible about drinking them and always wonders why she is so

sick in her stomach. When I told her what he said she simply said well I have

other friends that drink it,like that made it ok, well duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I

don't think so!!!!!!! Personally I wouldn't jeapordize my health for them.
