Guest guest
Ear pain IS included as a symptom on many Lyme symptom lists. The ear pain can be internal, like an ear infection, or external. I have had both. Many times I have had my doc check my ears because they hurt so bad, like ear infections do. Sometimes she finds them red and inflammed inside and sometimes they appear clear. What often helps me is to take Mucinex (which is now OTC - guaifenesin) to open up the eustachion tubes. This usually clears up the pressure, too. I am usually on Lyme ABX which would clear up any ear infection, so we do not add in any additional ABX for the ear pain. I have had a lot of it and we believe it is directly related to the LYME. Sometimes my external ears turn red, swell, are hot to the touch and painful. It usually lasts for a couple of days at a time, and then just goes away. It is strange when that happens, and I have spoken to a couple of other people who have experienced the same thing after contracting Lyme. Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for replying =)  I know ear pain is listed on the symptom list and I did get this years ago but that has gone away and now I have constant ear pressure/fullness which was not listed on the symptom list so that is why I asked if anyone gets this.  Mine is definitely not related to sinuses or eustasion  tube blockage because I saw several ENT's to check for that and they said everything was clear.  That is why it is so strange.  I was told by my doctor that Lyme can attack the inner ear (which is not something that can be seen visually as the middle ear can be) causing ear pressure and/or pain and/or dizziness.  I was just curious how many people deal with this and it sounds like a lot of us.  Someone should think about adding that symptom on the lyme list.  I just started treatment today so we'll see if that gets any better over time...I pray it does! Guest guest
I think any antibiotic ear drops should work. I use tobradex. Check out my cholesteatoma blog at lisaceardisease.blogspot.com IDQ Companies
Guest guest
Hey ! Sorry to hear that you have this condition. I had cholesteatoma earlier this year and had a LOT of ear pain from it. I was using ear drops occasionally to calm the pain as well but when I had a check up with an ear doctor, they told me that I should not use ear drops! Overuse of the ear drops might make your ear immune to the effectiveness of antibiotics altogether. I was advised to stick to Tylenol for pain. Also, you can put cotton in your ear to avoid pain from the air. You should also keep water out of your ear! Water/moistness helps cholesteatomas grow. I was told to rub a little bit of petroleum jelly (vasaline) into a piece of cotton and then to put that in my ear. The petroleum blocks the water and the cotton wicks it away. I hope that helps. Be well. Peace, Kat > > Hi I'm new. Just arrived in SD from the UK. Guest guest
My doctors always told me to keep my ears warm and if its hot where u are just wear a headband to protect them from the cold and draft. I personally that, that works. as for the shower you must make sure you dont get any water in you ears if you dont already wear a shower cap start using it. I would not use just any ear drops as you may cause more damage. Hope this helps. > > Hi I'm new. Just arrived in SD from the UK. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice, this is brilliant. I didn't know that water helps the c/toma grow!!! I will ensure that I am significantly more careful with water. I thought that this was post surgery rather than before. It is very hot here but there is a good breeze from the sea even where we are. It gets cold at night and also of course there is plenty of air conditioning which are all irritating my ear. I will get a headband, that is a good idea thanks. As for the ear drops, I will stop using them. 3 different sets of antibiotics didn't touch my ear infection earlier in the year, only these drops so you are right I had better watch out! I've found tylenol didn't work either & have rarely taken co codamol which I've brought with me from the UK and they work a treat
Guest guest
Be careful of the painkillers that you do use. You may have to be completely off of them for a certain period of time before any surgery can take place. Check with your doc. I don't think it matters exactly what is happening with your ears, except to " know " that your body is doing its job, and if you are getting ear symptoms it is because of that. +++I don't think moisture in your ears would be a problem, unless it was water. Ears like moisture from the air too, just like the nose, sinuses, skin, etc.; just don't put any directly in your ears. +++You are doing everything right, so don't be concerned. I've discovered that when my body was retracing something treatments didn't help, so all I could do was lessen the pain. I usually do that with heat. So you could apply heat to your ears by holding a light bulb close enough to feel the heat, but not to burn. Or put one of those packs on your ear(s) that you heat up in a microwave, or use a heating pad. All the best, Bee
Guest guest
Hi  Marcie, Bee and others, I feel compelled to write after reading your email.  A natural remedy for ear pain which I discovered in Germany is:- Chop an onion into small pieces and then place these inside a handkerchief. Secure the handkerchief with an elastic band (or something similar).  Place the handkerchief over the sore ear, and then a warm water bottle over that. Lie down for a while (10-15mins) and the pain will subside. I am always amazed by this simple remedy. I have suffered dreadfully from sinus and ear pain in the past, and this has always worked. Bee, I have been reading and learning (I am still navitgating my way around the site - oh so much to read and too little time),  and am slowly getting myself onto your program. My history mirrors those of many (too many) others who have spent countless years trying to find the answers to  'ill' health.  Now though I see a light at the end of my tunnel. It is also good for lung congestion, bronchitis, coughs, etc. +++My favorite remedy is garlic, because I used it for my grandson's ear aches when he was 9 months old. In less than 5 minutes after putting a raw piece of garlic, or a few drops of garlic oil, he stopped crying, his ear wasn't red, and it totally handled the problem! Of course garlic is in the onion family of foods, so any of them work well. > Bee, I have been reading and learning (I am still navitgating my way around the site - oh so much to read and too little time),  and am slowly getting myself onto your program. Guest guest
Hi le Your not going to die from TX. You might think that you are, but you wont. According to my research, the chance of dying from the TX itself, is almost zero. People may have died from other complications - like l have CHF [congestive heart failure - weak heart], and the Interferon may be too strong for my heart. Your ear pain may be nothing more than some minor infection, or ear problem. Head colds commonly cause earaches. If it concerns you greatly, please go see your doctor ASAP. Please do not stop your TX without your doctors advice. Youve come so far, and done so well. Pretty soon you will be able to put all this HCV stuff behind you, and get on with your life. love don in ks From: dbrown715907 <dbrown715907@...>Subject: [ ] ear pain Date: Wednesday, April 28, 2010, 8:53 PM the last few days Ihave been having this bad ear pain, like someone is stabbing a pencil trew my ear. Guest guest
Hi le,I guess I can second that. You may think you are going to die, but you won't. actually. What you may be experiencing is the "psychotic" side effects of tx. Not that you are going crazy, but tx does have it's mental sides. For me I became quite a bit paranoid, I could make a mountain out of a mole hill. A couple times I was sure I was dying from something or another. Maybe a brain tumor, when I had a headache. A heart attack when my chest hurt (from normal aches and pains). Like Don said., hang in there. I would take 400 mg of ibuprofen, a nice hot bath, listen too ENYA, or some other soothing music and try to relax. You probably are having trouble sleeping, maybe take 25 mg of benadryl. Knocks me out all the time. Hang in there. BTW, How long have you been on tx? Guest guest
I have an ear story. A couple years ago I went to see a new wholistic type osteopath. I told her my symptoms were constant low grade pain in my kidney, liver area, shoulder blade and then around to my armpit and breast and then up my neck inside my ear and pressure and pain in my eye, all on the right side. She just looked at me funny and said, " How did you know that? " I said, " What? " She said, " That is a nerve path in your body, etc., etc. " A few years ago, I had that same stabbing feeling in my ear and lost the normal hearing, had more of a echo, tinnitus type thing going on. But it resolved itself. I was not on treatment. My guess is that when our liver is swollen due to ups and downs in inflammation due to life or bad diet or a drink or treatment, it presses on that nerve and then you have these variable related symptoms. When I went to the opthamologist for my, before treatment check, this month, he told me the same thing, that there is a nerve system that runs up that side. That is probably why there is the risk of retinal problems on those with inner eye issues before starting tx. le, you will be OK. It is an odd side effect. You might look up what they recommend for tinnitus... drops, cotton ball, I don't know. By the way, you are dashing my positive thinking about wieght loss during treatment!!! I have kinda ordered up my set of symptoms. I've planned on losing 20-30 pounds, to be kept off permantly and in exchange for that blessing, I'll accept a couple days of flu like symptoms after injections. But nothing else....heh. Guest guest
Deb,You just keep them positive thoughts and get on with yourself! The more positive you enter treatment, the better you can keep your attitude during treatment, the easier it will be for you...I like your outlook; 20-30 pounds, won't rebound those, a little flu once a week...good luck with that! It's like Don was talking about a couple weeks ago, the dragon in our bodies, and the dragon in our heads. The dragon in our head is the one we have the most control over, and if it's calm and positive, the dragon in our bodies has a harder time running the show.SteveLife is much more fun when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party. Guest guest
This is the first time I have seen the off and on pain I have in my right side described exactly. It can be really painful--especially the ear pain. Sounds like a good explanation--Did she tell you what to do? Doctors don't pay much attention to me--I'm just old and my Hep C has stabilized at Stage 2 as far as they can tell so I don't plan to treat SuziQ > > I have an ear story. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info. Sounds as if you have really run the gamut with alternatives and looked for information. My Dr Berkson experience was a trip !!! I knew my labs were good. I had been on his oral protocol for about 8 months. He ordered a few more labs and then asked me why I was there. He said I was fine but since I was there I ought to go ahead and have some ALA IV's. He added Vit D3 as I was low on that. He added Low Dose Naltrexone. I took it for about 4 mos, have stopped as it caused chronic headaches for me. May start again at extremely low dose and build up.Univ of Pennsylvania is hoping to get enough evidence to get clinical trials on LDN. Yes, the treatment is so much more successful with 2b. I am 1b and the success rate was about 30% when I was diagnosed. I was already 65 when diagnosed so the doctor said my success might be even lower. As I approach 76 in August, I am sure my age would affect the possibility of success. As I have aged with Hep C other things are appearing--especially in the last two years. I have early Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and Some kidney problems. ALL could be related to Hep C. ALL could be related to aging. ALL could be related to DIET. Would love to hear a little more discussion on the forum of how much diet affects the health of the liver and what one can do to help keep the liver healthy. I feel incredibly fortunate that Hep C has affected my life so little. I basically stopped drinking in 1966, did a little light drinking when I divorced in 1983. Then I stopped when my son was killed in auto accident in 1984--afraid I might use alcohol to deaden pain. I've lived alone since 1983 except when I cared for my mom during the last years of her dementia. Was a single mom for many years. That was the really scary time!! Lost a dear friend from the " wild years " to cancer that could not be treated because she was on transplant list for her Hep C seven years ago. She had long ago stopped using, but did not stop drinking. No one else from those years is left. I think I have had such an easy time because I was taught from childhood to concentrate on what I DO have rather than what I DON'T have. I know at times that I may seem a little out dated--but in truth I am. I also am proof that Hep C does Not mean a death sentence. Guest guest
SuziQ You know, dont you, that you are my hero? Seriously. I just love your strength to carry on, your knowledge, your positive attitude, and everything that you teach us all. I wish there was a Dr B for each of us, to guide us, and care for us. I have watched all his YouTube videos, and read most everything he has written about the liver. I am a regular on his site, and am constantly listening out for new stuff from him. This is about as close as I personally will ever get to him. There is alot more clinical studies going on than just at UP. Every once in awhile I run across something in the LDN groups. Its mostly about MS and other health issues, but occasionally a tidbit about the liver. LDN research is very slow because most Med Professionals dont take it seriously yet. But it is comming along. I agree 100% with you about the need for more diet discussion and info on forum. I am a big believer in diet helping us fight and heal. I post whatever I can find, and have compiled quite a bit in the HCV Links Library. Folders - 005A Self Help & 005C/D/E & 006G-M Diet - http://health.dir./group/ /links There is a lot more in the HCV News Archieves - folders 000C. Im like you in a way - I dwell on what I have, not on what I dont. This way I am always content, and each day is a blessing. Please post more if you can - I just love your wisdom, knowledge, and stories. You teach us so many things, and you are living proof to boot. love don in ks From: SuziQ <ancientkron@...>Subject: [ ] Re: ear pain Date: Saturday, May 1, 2010, 2:09 AM Thanks so much for the info. Lost a dear friend from the "wild years" to cancer that could not be treated because she was on transplant list for her Hep C seven years ago. Guest guest
My Doc had me put athletes foot cream in my ear with a Q-tip. It worked and have been doing it for a few years now. Don't know if we have same problem but may be worth a shot. Good luck Butch > > > > > > I have an ear story. " > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
The fungus that you treat with atheletes foot cream is common with Hcv. I ended up with a anti fungal cream ( presc) that I use everyday... Most of my body is involved. When it got real bad in my ear, it caused fluid build up. I currently have a tube in one ear ; all cause of that fungus..." yeast dermatitis" I researched it and found it is a side of either the HCV or liver disease( I forget which).http://facebook.com/people/andTrudy-Kinsey/1340460877 " A well- behaved woman never made History". Guest guest
Hi ladies, I just got back from seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, due to some ear pain I've been having. He took one look at my left ear and said, Yup, it's not normal. Sooooo, I'm having a cat scan of my ear as soon as it can be fit in. It brought back memories of Rogene and her demise from ear cancer. I told him about Rogene and he told me that it did not look like cancer, but he said there is definitely something like a growth behind my ear drum, and lots of scar tissue on it as well. He seemed almost befuddled by it, but definitely sure that it was abnormal, and concerned about it. So, the saga continues!!!! What next??? I'm sad today.... My son leaves tomorrow morning..... Along with our truck being broken into and the loss of over $2000 in cash, this year has not started out very well!! But, I'll keep trusting God!
