Guest guest
Hi Cindy, Sometimes prolong use of Amantidine or Baclofen and bladder infection can cause blood in the urine. Irrigation of bladder along with antibiotic usually will stop the bleeding within a few days.

Guest guest
Cindy, My husband, Ned, has had blood in his urine off and on since last August. He has been cathing x 7+ years, and this is not a common symptom. Treatment with antibiotics last fall did not help what we thought was a UTI (we tried 2 different antibiotics) and urine cultures were coming back negative. Since Thanksgiving he has passed about 15 kidney stones - He went to the hospital for an IVP in February. Found he had several small kidney stones, but those didn't seem to be causing any problems -- however, the doctor said " bladder stones " were a possibility, but the only way to know for sure was to scope the bladder. This showed several bladder stones (the four I saw were about the size of dimes or pennies) and the doctor feels these may be causing all of the blood in the urine (sometimes the blood is occult and only picked up by test strips, other times the urine has so much blood and clots that his urine looks like cranberry juice or tomato juice)! Ned is scheduled for surgery May 15 to have the bladder stones removed. You might want to ask your urologist about checking for bladder stones. Guest guest
Cindy, You wrote; " What are the group's thoughts? Is bleeding like this normal after cathing? with infection? Could infection be causing bleeding? Any tips or treatments that we should be talking to medical staff about? The answer to the first question is; yes, bleeding could be caused by a UTI. It also can be caused by kidney stones passing down thro the ureters, the two tubes (one per kidney) which empty into the bladder. As far as tips, if they have not done a cystoscope on him by now, you should fire the whole lot. A cystoscope scope has a small camera on the end of a cable which allows the doctor to actually see the inside of the urethra and bladder. Also he should be seeing a urologist for this problem. Most doctors get very worried when someone is passing blood from the urinary tract. Let us know how things come out. Guest guest
Cindy, What cathing method and equipment? How tall/large and who does cathing? Any past history of stones? Gravel? Mucous? Albumin? How much water? distilled? and when given? hours? Enlarged penis, epididymitis? Send more information - too many variables. Gross bleeding (large unceasing at first like urinating?) Seems my Jan has had most everything in that department over the years. Some med combos can cause bleeding. No, doctors do NOT understand everything, but irrigation can't hurt and may help. Advice can be considered. FOLEY CATH USERS should know that MOST infectious bacteria are in the FIRST half inch of the urethra. I use a drain sponge with Lantaseptic on husband Jan's penis tip and avoid irritation and exposures that can cause problems. LA Louise in Springhill where weather is completely unpredictable these days.

Guest guest
Louise, I'm afraid I can't answer most of your questions at this point, but I will pass them on to my parents. My dad is scheduled for an exam tomorrow so we will hopefully know more then. Thanks to all for the tips and well wishes. Cindy
