Guest guest
Hi : I was the one who asked a few weeks ago about both donating blood and being a bone marrow donor. I have since checked with my wl surgeon and was told that as long as my labs, especially my iron levels, are in the normal range, I would be able to both donate blood and be a bone marrow donor. But we have to make sure that the people who are testing us for these things know about our surgery and that our labs have been in the normal range for at least a few months prior. Also, I was told by my surgeon that you had to be at least 12 months post-op before even thinking of doing this. I haven't done anything about either yet as I just received my one-year lab results, but I am planning on doing this soon. We have a little girl in our congregation who has leukemia and can no longer undergo chemotheraphy, so they are looking for bone marrow matches (no one in her family has matched so far). This is why I wanted to know if I could be considered a donor. I would definitely check with your personal surgeon because I know there are some surgeons out there who don't want their patients to donate blood or be bone marrow donors. Guest guest
That firefighter who donated the bone marrow to that little girl was Terry Farrell and he was a dear friend of mine many years ago. A bunch of us used to rent houses in the Hamptons during the summer and upstate at Hunter Mountain. We used to tell our parents we were skiing, but I don't think in the 6 or 7 years that we rented the house upstate that any of us hit the slopes. We hit the bottle pretty darn hard on those weekends. Terry was a super guy, great personality, a lot of fun and would give you the shirt off his back to help anyone out. It didn't hurt that he was as cute as a button too. We were so excited and proud of him when he got the phone call about helping that little girl. I recently found a bunch of pictures from a lot of our exploits, put them in an album and brought them over to his brother Tim who owns a local bar near my house. We sat and remembered the good times and I told him to keep the pictures for the family to share. It was gut wrenching at times, but also quite cathartic. I'm sorry I missed the show. Just thought I'd let you know his name and what a truly wonderful person he was. He was very much loved and sorely missed. Regina
