I do my proteins plain with crushed ice to make it thicker and colder. My

preference is Optimum Whey Double Chocolate. But at first when I was trying

to get used to the texture, taste and smell, I added a couple teaspoons of

peanut butter. That was actually pretty good. But it got to be a pain so now

I just do them without any additions. I also use a straw and drink out of a

glass that way I don't get the smell which was what really put me off. I now

do 5 or 6 shakes a day as my protein levels pre-surgery were at the very

bottom of the normal range. They are starting to climb. It also keeps me

satiated and on track with losing. Good luck and good drinking.

I have been meaning to write on this subject since I am just so thrilled with my

recent shake experiences. I always use the hand blender for my powder based

shakes. Just shaking them up never does the trick. Very rarely, I will haul

out the blender and use ice, but I don't really like them that thick.

Now - on to my two new favorite flavors!! I use the Davinci Sugar Free syrups,

and am so hooked on these two new " recipes "

Designer Protein powder (2 scoops)

6 ozs. cold coffee

1 " glog " Kahuli Cafe syrup

- okay, I'm not kidding, this is just like getting a thin frappucino. If you

like the thickness, do it in the blender with ice. This is so good, even my

kids are begging for them!

Designer Protein powder (2 scoops)

6 ozs. cold water

1 " glog " Cinnamon syrup

- so different, so yummy! I keep waiting for the powdery cinnamon gag, but of

course it's not there. Just this luscious, startling cinnamon and chocolate

flavor.

And since I buy my shakes ready-made for the office, I have just started using

the Ultra Pure Protein in cans. I hate all the other Ultra Pure Protein

products, but these are delicious (35 g. protein in 12 ozs., no sugar, 3 g.

carb). My favorite flavor is the Caramel Cream, but Banana Cream and Strawberry

Cream are also right up there. Not as fond of the Cappucino flavor. These do

leave a mild aftertaste about 2-3 minutes after drinking.

I am a little over two years post op. I do not take any protein

supplements unless I want to gain weight. I get all my protein from

food. I eat a lot of yogurt and Arby Roast Beef sandwiches.

I take protein supplements and have since April, and I have not gained an ounce.

I drink 4-5 per day for a total of 150 g. I make mine with water only.

I guess each body is different, but when I wasn't doing protein, I crashed and

burned and am still in recovery for protein malnutrition and severe anemia.

I would suggest you DO do protein shakes as you don't absorb protein from food

(due to being bypassed).

I do know of several people off track, who in fact, started protein shakes or

increased the number of protein shakes they consumed and the weight started

dropping.

Your health is your choice. I learned the hard way.

Be careful with these. I understand that they just recently stopped using whey

protein and changed to milk protein in the Ultra Pure Protein shakes.

I used the older ones (the ones with whey protein) for a year and my protein

levels dropped. The milk protein is even less bioavailable.

I always add ice to my shakes. Other ideas: Diet chocolate or orange

soda mixed with vanilla protein powder, instant coffee with a little

chocolate syrup (all sugar free) is great. A great tip is to add a Tbs

instant pudding powder, any flavor, to the shake- it makes it thicker

and makes a big difference. I love a " pina colada " - vanilla powder,

banana, coconut and rum extract or syrup, 1/2 cup crushed pineapple and

ice in a blender- it's the best.
