I agree with your doctor on this one - at two years, if your labs are good, with no downward trends, I wouldn't worry about supplementing protein. But, make sure your protein levels are steady, not slowly declining. I think there are a number of people who had troublesome metabolisms before surgery which contributed to the original weight problem. I guess it's only natural that at some point those metabolisms would come back to haunt us. I suspect I am the kind of person who will have to eat less than 1500 calories and exercise rigorously, or eat less than 1100-1200. I think that just bites! As far as calories go, I have to count the ones in my protein shakes. Kate
Guest guest
< > Hello , I've been at the same weight for 3 years now, which is 4.5 years after my surgery. Other than iron-deficiency anemia, reversible with supplements, and increased dental plaque, I've been very healthy, with all of the pre-WLS morbidities resolved. However, as I caution every preop who contacts me, this is an extremely high maintenance surgical procedure. Daily supplements of vitamins, protein, adherence to my particular regimen of no liquids with meals, no carbonated beverages, and eliminating many food items that don't agree with my pouch aren't an option for me; it's my lifestyle. But it's the only method that has ever enabled me to maintain a weight loss, and the return on investment has been 150% in terms of health, career, and social factors. HTH! Guest guest
..I'm 2 1/2 years post, and I don't think that is far enough out to really tell what is going to happen. I did lose 100% of my weight, and live in constant fear of this bubble bursting! My disease is morbid obesity, and for today, it is in remission. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. I think staying this scared, helps me. I have also not listened to people who tell me I am too thin...or I should gain some weight. I figure that will happen on it's own. In the meantime, I'm staying good and scared. So far, so good. Please?? Anyone?? Hi , My name is Bauer and I will be 7 years out from a distal RNY on December 27, 2002. My surgery being 12/27/95. I did have a staple line disruption and a revision (with 50 lb weight gain) back in 3/99 and a tummy tuck in 12/99. My lowest weight was 145 lbs, and now I sit at 155 lbs. They say that a 10 lb " bounceback " from your lowest weight is VERY normal! I had gotten into the habit of not following my doc's advice, therefore became very anemic and protein malnourished as I wasn't taking protein supplements or vitamins. I have been on IV vitamins and iron since February of this year, and can now say I am better than I ever was! I will go on a maintenence plan for the IV iron and vitamins, and hopefully after I see the hematologist today, I can go to once a month - now at twice a month for iron and four times a month for vites (was 3 x a week for iron). Be sure and do your protein supplements and take your vitamins. If you aren't doing protein supplements, I would be happy to suggest where to get them. I thought I was " fine " without them, until I crashed and burned. Are you a distal? Medial? Proximal? My labs are ALMOST normal now, and I'm shocked that I didn't gain weight when I started my protein shakes again - but I guess my body REALLY needed it! Take care and welcome to our group! Guest guest
Hi , I'm 9 1/2 yrs post op. As for weight gain, I haven't had any problems. I started at 256lbs. I was 5'5 " now 5'6 " (still wondering how we do that). Anyway, at about midway through my second year, I got down to 117lbs. This was way too thin for me and I had to work to put more on. I got back up and run between 130 and 135lbs. it hasn't moved more than 5lbs back and forth since. My doctor set my original goal at 140lbs. As for being healthy, I think I am.
