Guest guest
Re: Convention-I have heard people discuss these things on AMOS and also talk about folks not showing and being stuck with costs. My vote: easy does it at first. Fay Bayuk
Guest guest
>>> I think we should invite the media. <<<< By making this a " convention " and including the media, much more planning and work will need to go into it than if it is a " social " thing. A convention does include speakers, brochures, renting rooms, notifying and getting sponsors and groups to rent space to get you to look at their goods (proteins, blenders, vitamins, etc)--which can help pay for the rooms, speakers, etc, but.... This would take 8-12 months minimum I would expect. If the media is going to be involved, there has to be some credibility, and for there to be credibility, it has to be organized, not just a party. I don't see calling the media saying " hey, we are all wls patients, come take our picture " will fly, nor be respected by anyone that matters. Now, we can think about creating and becoming an organization (name ideas? GROWLS-graduates of wls), having a convention and issuing a press release 12-18 months from now, and in the meanwhile having a party (you know, the gran pooh group and others). The speakers can be graduates, or people we, as graduates, respect and would like to learn from. It would be our decision. I don't think it would be difficult to get sponsors, especially from the protein companies, but the places that we are thinking of holding our get-together book out their meeting rooms well in advance. I am willing to be involved in this. feedback??? doc carolyn

Guest guest
Doc, I agree with you 100%! I had these same thoughts after I read the post about inviting the media. I am a real estate broker, but have my degrees in psych so my company would pay me to work with the speakers for our conventions and help with the personal touches. It was no easy feat to get the speakers booked (and the costs are unbelievable per hour!) as well as making sure they are well taken care of with special foods, reading materials, transportation, yadda yadda! I think it would be a better suggestion to attempt a social gathering on a smaller scale This will give indicators of how many grads are REALLY interested in attending (imagine making a big deal of this and only a few show up?!) and preparing for some fun activities, ie, protein tasting party, etc. If we carry that off well, then maybe we can look at bigger and better for the next year. Guest guest
I am way behind on my email, but I just want to put my two cents in here. I agree with this " convention " thing being social at first. Better not to bite off more then we can chew. Should the social stuff work out......then think about making it a convention. At that point there may be more interest and help available. Debbie in Gig Harbor ladybostons@... www.paws2print.com
